If you’re like me, you probably have friends who are struggling to make ends meet in these challenging economic times. Some of my buddies save money by using free antivirus software. This is not something I recommend for most people, because the old adage is usually true, “You get what you pay for…”
I do understand that there are organizations that provide decent antivirus protection with their freeware versions. However, it’s important to know that if you are using free antivirus software, it only protects you and your system AFTER malware is detected and already on your computer.
Detection is important but without a good firewall, it’s like having sentries atop a fortress riddled with gaping holes and a broken gate. Read more about the importance of prevention vs. detection in John Gable’s recent blog.
My security-savvy friends know there’s no denying that the best online defense starts with a strong two-way firewall. That’s why when I told them about ZoneAlarm’s new free firewall, they were all really stoked (that’s an old-school nerd term that means “excited”).
I’m stoked about the upgrades to ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, which include:
- Quieter and smarter security – automatic protection settings for millions of programs and far fewer alerts than other free firewalls
- More features added to the ZoneAlarm Security toolbar (for Internet Explorer and Firefox), including free identity protection service and online backup services (2GB free)
- The addition of DefenseNet™, which leverages real-time threat data from millions of users to stop latest attacks
What is DefenseNet? It’s ZoneAlarm’s community-powered intelligence system that uses threat data from millions of our users to rapidly identify the latest unknown viruses and spyware. Once a threat has been identified and validated by the ZoneAlarm research team, you are provided with pro-active protection.
The new ZoneAlarm Free Firewall also includes browser security and identity protection features. It is a must-have for folks with free antivirus software, but are not using a good firewall to complement it.
ZoneAlarm’s firewall blocks unauthorized access attempts and other unknown threats by systematically identifying hackers and automatically making your computer “invisible” whenever you access the Internet.
Here’s what the ZoneAlarm Free Firewall does that antivirus software alone cannot do:
- Stop hacking disguised as harmless network transmissions
- Make you invisible to hackers
- Use threat data from users worldwide to detect attacks
Also, the ZoneAlarm Free Firewall stops unknown viruses and spyware from actions like sending your data to hackers, and it identifies malicious programs masquerading as good programs. These are security features that are not available with most antivirus programs.
You may be wondering if ZoneAlarm’s firewall works with any antivirus program. The answer is yes, of course, it does, however, for best results, we recommend the ZoneAlarm security software. You can now download the new and improved free firewall version here: http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/free-upgrade-security-suite-zonealarm-firewall.htm. Be sure to tell your friends, too. The more secure your family and friends are, the more secure you’ll be.
