New ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2012

New ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2012

We just released ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2012, the latest version of ZoneAlarm’s powerful 2-way firewall, and we’re very excited about it!  ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2012 is compatible with any standalone Antivirus (AV) package, and it blocks hackers and prevents viruses and spyware that by-pass antivirus software.

To download a free copy, please visit www.zonealarm.com/freefirewall.

Antivirus is not enough

Many consumers today rely solely on antivirus software, and that’s just not enough to keep your PC safe. Did you know antivirus software misses almost 30% of viruses? And it does not provide any protection against hackers.

According to Rob Ayoub, CISSP and Global Director for Frost & Sullivan’s Information Security Practice, the use of free security software has exploded in the past few of years, and Frost & Sullivan has seen a dangerous shift towards only free antivirus software.

“More than 200 million people today use free antivirus software without a strong 2-way firewall, which leaves the majority of users more vulnerable than when they used a premium security suite,” said Ayoub.

At a “minimum”, consumers need to strengthen their security by adding a strong, two-way firewall on top of their antivirus software. Because if you don’t have a firewall, it’s basically like leaving your home with the doors unlocked and the windows open, according to Michael Calce, the hacker once known as “Mafiaboy”.

We are providing a free and effective solution!

What’s new?

Our 2012 firewall has a new user interface, making it very easy to use. Once installed, it works automatically and quietly in the background. It monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic to and from a PC and the Internet – blocking hackers from getting into a PC and stopping them from sending out information and attacks.

How it works:  ZoneAlarm Free Firewall renders a PC invisible to hackers, preventing them from gaining access to a user’s computer and stealing information. And when malware, such as spyware or bots, bypasses AV software and infects a user’s PC, our firewall’s unique “outbound” protection kicks in. Outbound protection stops thieves from sending stolen information back to its host servers and distributing attacks or spam to the PC owner’s contacts.

While other firewalls create too many confusing alerts or, like the default Windows firewall, provide only partial protection, our new firewall simplifies the experience for all users. It is powered by ZoneAlarm DefenseNet™, a proven 3rd generation cloud-based service. ZoneAlarm DefenseNet automatically verifies the safety of a program by analyzing data from more than 60 million users through the cloud, eliminating overwhelming alerts and interruptions.

Do you have a powerful “2-way” firewall? If not, download the ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2012 now! It is available in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. And it is completely free for individuals and not-for-profit charitable entities.

  1. Shame, no offline installer!

  2. My English is not so good, I am not certain I understand right.
Can I use this together with AVAST antivirus programme?

  3. Lee Binder ON

@ Omid: that’s not true – ZA very well supplies the full installer on their server: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1025_za/zaSetup_101_065_000.exe (149MB).

In case ZA moves that file (which would not be smart ..) you’d have to google zaSetup_101_065_000.exe

  4. i love it its the best secure adequate and very defensive firewall, i have ever experienced.i am not a wizard when it comes too using advanced settings for my comp i am just a joe plain on a comp, and, i can trust zone alarm too defend and protect people from, viruses and so on,from harming me or my comp.ty zone alarm people!!!!!you have and still do a great job on protecting us the people from harm in every sense of the word.please don’t ever stop getting ahead of tyhe competition and those bad dudes that try and mess up our comps and so on.ty again, YOU RULE.

  5. Bring back program control or I am switching to a different firewall. I like to control what can and can’t access the internet myself.

    • zonealarm ON

Prgram control is still in the program.

To reach program/application control in the free firewall:
      Open ZoneAlarm
      Click on Computer
      Under Application control, click Settings.
      Click View Programs button

  6. Where is my zone alarm…
Can I download an old version???

No more full installer, to install before connecting to Internet.
Why doesn’t ask for permanent or one shoot???
    More heavy and just useless.

  7. Robert ON

I’ve tried to install the new version on two Windows 7 PCs. It fails to install on either. The software downloads, but after the restart the files are there but don’t work. I’m not impressed. I’ve never had this problem before with ZoneAlarm. I’m using Windows firewall at the moment.

    • zonealarm ON

Try turning off your Windows Firewall first. This is probably causing the conflict.

  8. Previous versions of Zonealarm Free had problems when Firefox was running on Vista. Has this been addressed in the new version?

  9. I miss the incoming and outgoing traffic monitor!!!

    • zonealarm ON

You can find this information on the “Computer” section of the product.

      • I mean the traffic monitor which used to be in the taskbar!!!

        • lokkmar ON

Yeah, I agree. It is very annoying not to be able to view the red upload/ green download icon in the taskbar. Can you switch it back on????

      • I agree w/ comment re: want to SEE the in/out activity on the taskbar icon. ZA – great to update the technology, but please allow an option to show the traffic in the icon. Thx.

        • Chris Gray ON

I Liked the early version with icons to tell you what progs. were using the connection

          • zonealarm ON

If you click on the Firewall tab in your product control panel, then click on “Application Control Settings”, you will see the trusted level for each program.

Checking the Help/about provides the following:
    Is this the 2012 version?
    ZoneAlarm Free Firewall version: 10.1.065.000
    vsmon version: 10.1.065.000
    Driver version: 10.1.065.000
    ZoneAlarm Browser Security: 1.5.350.0
    ZoneAlarm ForceField Spyware Scanner: 1.5.350.0
    ZoneAlarm ForceField Anti-Phishing Database: 1.2.104.0
ZoneAlarm ForceField Spyware Sites Database: 04.155

  11. Do I have to upgrade?

    • zonealarm ON

You do not have to upgrade. We encourage you to use the most recent version for added protection, but the decision is yours.

  12. Zeke Tobrock ON

After installing the new 2012 version, vsmon.exe is now using most of the CPU, anywhere from 45 – 100%. I did not notice this problem with the previous version of the free firewall. I’m running Google Chrome on an XP system.

  13. If you are going to use it with Avast free anti virus, you should deactivate web-shield feature and network scan to avoid getting Blue screen of death!

  14. will i still get updates to 2011 if i don’t upgrade to 2012?

    • Yes, you will get the updates. But it may not be secure enough! That’s why they are offering you a new version for free!

      Out-of-date firewalls are hackers’ paradise!

  15. I have been using ZoneAlarm for many, many years and it’s an awesome product. However, I found some functions are missing from the 2012 version, examples, “Engage Internet Lock”, “Stop All Internet Activity” green and red alert boxes. It’s really a pity to miss all these useful features. Till now, I’m still holding on to upgrade to this new version. Is there a reason for taking out all these useful features in the previous versions?

  16. What happened to the “Lock internet” and “Stop internet activity” (something like that) buttons when I used to right click the taskbar icon?

  17. Is there an ETA on when the Private Browsing option will be available on the toolbar? Is there another way to access this option?
I use my computer for work and personal business and I would rather not allow the company IT dept to see/track my activity while handling personal business on lunch break.
I have windows 7 and use both Firefox 8.0 and IE 9. Private Browsing is not available on either of these.

    • zonealarm ON

We do not offer provate browsing in our Firewall Product. Both IE and Firefox offer bassic private browsing features. For a more advanced version you would need to use our ZoneAlarm Extreme product.

  18. G.S. Hadley ON

So………ZoneLabs………answer the previous query, what happened to the internet lockout and as well, how is the new program control nomenclature different from the old…….it appears confusing when compared to the original.

    • zonealarm ON

This feature will be coming back very soon. There was a technical issue that prevented us from offering it sooner.

  19. i can’t install the latest free firewall.. not sure if this is because my laptop is on double OS.. windows and ubuntu.. pls help?

  20. Just recently updated Zone Alarm free firewall and it seems to be okay, but I do miss the “Stop All Internet Activity”. I could right click the system tray icon and click this option during cd/dvd burning and also if my machine slowed down, it would help me identify if something from my pc was accessing the internet and slowing things down. Why did you guys remove this feature and will you give it back to us? I really found it to be a great feature. Really appreciate this free firewall. I recommend it to everyone!!!

    • zonealarm ON

This feature will return very soon. We had some technical issues we needed to resolve.

  21. For 3 years I used Kaspersky AV and ZoneAlarm free to protect my computer. This year I bought Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 and used it for a while. But I prefer ZA firewall. So I disabled KIS 2012 firewall and I’m using it as a AV program along with ZA free.
Will this combination make any trouble? Wish no!

    • zonealarm ON

The combination should work fine. Just make sure you turn off the Kaspersky Firewall.

  22. ZoneAlarm new layout is suited to new improving “(i)Pad style” generation of users. But there are common users who wish to frequently and rapidly reach the advanced configurable parts of a program and adjust things for different situations at a time.
    A question:
Is it hard for a program to add a very useful item like MS Office “Quick Access” and place a reference to it in systray icon context menu?
As a user I will be very happy if -in every part of a program’s configuration modules- right click and see in a context menu an option to “Add this page (or ?) to systray icon context menu”.
On ZoneAlarm 2012 sure this will reduce the nagging of “naggers” like me who are “always temporarily change advanced configurations” style of users, and the new layout will be more pleasing for them!
I have turned off my paid Internet security program’s firewall and use ZoneAlarm free again because it is enough for me. For years I had surfed on the web completely safe with ZoneAlarm free firewall, but I have an urge to downgrade to version 9 for it has more configurable items and more friendly layout , although I know the new version has improved security options comparing to the older versions.

  23. I agree with earlier post. I miss being able to right click to stop internet activity, and also miss zone alarm showing when there is activity present. Not happy with the new version.

  24. I miss being able to right click to stop internet activity, please bring it back!

  25. You mention bringing back the “Stop Internet Activity” feature at some point, but what about the red/green upload/download indicator on the taskbar? Like most ZA users, I found it to be extremely useful and would very much appreciate seeing its return.

  26. I also do miss the “Stop All Internet Activity”.

    zonealarm ON December 5, 2011 – 5:28 pm says:
This feature will return very soon. We had some technical issues we needed to resolve.

Today 10/02/2012 I downloaded and installed the ZoneAlarm firewall Free edition and is still missing.

    • zonealarm ON

The feature will come back in the next update. This is scheduled to happen in the next few weeks.

  27. When will this work again with Firefox? I want to update my Firefox browser but am getting message that ZA is incompatible, very sad about that as I’ve used ZA for years and like it. But, I will have to move to another program if ZA doesn’t catch up.

    • zonealarm ON

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall is compatible with Firefox. We are doing everything we can to keep up with Mozilla’s ever exponential rate of releasing new version releases of Firefox. Rest assure that your two-way firewall from ZoneAlarm is working to its full extent.

      • I’m getting an alert from Firefox 10 that ZA Security Engine 1.5.350.0 is incompatible and will be disabled. Now what?

  28. I’m having problems with ZA (free) and Firefox.
I’ve been using both for years! But now (last versions) they seem don’t work together :(
When ZA active, Firefox don´t start! ZA asks for an allow to Firefox connection, I give it but Firefox still don´t start. I see the process on TM but not the interface.
Do I need to uninstall ZA?? :(

  29. Hi, there is no internet activity (green/red) indicator any more, this is extremely useful, is there a way of turning it on?

  30. nancy roberts ON

I love free Zone Alarm but I also love Firefox browser. When Firefox upgraded to 9.0 I found out it wasn’t compatible with my free Zone Alarm. Can you tell me when Zone Alarm will put out a version that is compatible with Firefox version 9 or 10. Thanks

  31. Martin ON

Please bring back “Internet Lock ” and “Stop internet activity”. I did not realize how much I have used them in the past until I upgraded to the latest software.

    • zonealarm ON

Thanks for your feedback. We’re working on bringing these features back in future releases. Stay tuned!

  32. chad ON

hey im using comodo firewall and windows firewall right now will ZAF give me additional protection and is it compatible with comodo?

    • zonealarm ON

We recommend to never run more than one firewall as it may cause conflicts with each other. When you install ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, Windows firewall is automatically disabled.

  33. You continue to say you will be adding the parts of the product that ZA is lacking from the older version, and that was near 4 months ago. When is it to happen? I have been a ZA lover for years now, but I am about to drop you. If these features are not added, then ZA has lost its awesomeness and its purpose on my computers. I hope you add them soon.

    • zonealarm ON

There should be a new update available in a few days. This version does add new features.

  34. Charlie ON

I just upgraded today and now I can’t bring up the “settings” to make changes. Had to go into regedit to even bring the icon up on my taskbar. Any ideas?

  35. frogguy ON

Since installing the new version of the free ZoneAlarm 2012 my CPU seems to be pegged at 100% much too often. Is this a known problem? This has effectively turned my computer into a 386.

    • Do a clean install. Sometimes ZA get’s a bit screwed up. Make sure you’re at the latest update.

  36. frogguy ON

And I miss the traffic indicator in the tray. Bring it back! Please!

    • There’s a lot of things ZA seems to have missing from the old release(s) or are too deeply buried in the product menus.

How about a menu for NEWBIES, one for AVERAGE users, and one for total EXPERTS? If Norton and some of the other utilities can do it why can’t ZA?

  37. I just allowed Zonealarm to update itself. Now there is no traffic indication (the red upload graph and green download graph) in the system tray. Why was this removed? I found it very useful- seeing if rogue applications were generating traffic behind my back. Bring it back or suggest me an alternative.

    • zonealarm ON

The traffic indicator did not get rolled over into current version 10.X, since it did not provide any security advantages. If you would like to download an older version of ZoneAlarm Free Firewall that has the traffic indicator, please visit http://bit.ly/1tSWn9

  38. Mike M ON

Since “upgrading” to version 10.1.101.000 I have had a problem with vsmon.exe consuming cpu resources and slowing downloads to a crawl. I know it’s the firewall, because if I turn it off the problem goes away. I did not have this problem with the previous version and I’m wondering if there’s any fix. I’ve tried re-installing and that did nothing, the only thing that helped was going to a trial version of an older firewall version that also had anti-virus which I don’t need and did not use.

    • zonealarm ON

Please make sure you meet the minimum system requirements before upgrading. Also, we recommend to always have your antivirus and firewall up-to-date and, most importantly, active.

      • Same problem here, on Win XP with ZoneAlarm 10.2. Impacts using Windows Remote Desktop over a VPN to access work PC. When vsmon.exe is normal, it’s just like sitting in front of the other PC with no lag. When vsmon.exe misbehaves, the remote access crawls.

Tools > Preferences > Backup & Restore Security Settings – Reset to Default button (and then rebooting) restores vsmon.exe proc utilization to decent levels… for a few days, but then it starts chewing up too much CPU again. Might end up looking for an alternative if I can’t figure out how to keep this from happening.

        • zonealarm ON

          Try the following:

Click on Firewall on the product control panel. Click on Advanced Settings–> Check “Allow VPN Protocols.

  39. Bill ON

Stop pushing an Antivirus product on me that I never wanted. I have recommended your product to all of my family and friends, but I will stop doing that now. Most of them already have an Antivirus installed but they also have your firewall. So, when they get prompted with an update and it installs your Firewall+Antivirus, I will now have more work uninstalling one of the AV applications. Because 2 Antivirus applications sounds good to everyone else, but to IT technicians, most of us know better.

Uninstalling your application now. I might try and reinstall Zonealarm Free Firewall in 1, 5, 10, or 15 days. I think 15 days is good, but will see how I feel then and ask myself again if I still don’t want your Antivirus.

    • zonealarm ON

Sorry for the inconvenience. We are working on a fix allowing users to select the option to stop receiving the upgrade notifications. In the meantime, click on “remind me in 15 days” while we work on the permanent fix.

  40. joe ON

I use AVG’s antivirus since it doesn’t nag me for updates, and I see the AVG’s firewall has “emergency mode” which turns off ALL internet traffic. ZA used to have this feature. Right now AVG’s fw is off, but I might give the whole suite a try.

I don’t like ZA’s virus scanning and the new UI is still too hard to navigate, even for a pro. I also want ZA’s web security OFF but it keeps turning itself back ON. I also want to see ZA delete it’s old logs or loop around it after a certain time frame or row amount.

  41. Glenn ON

Is there a way to just uninstall the anti-virus part of the new Zone Alarm firewall plus anti-virus that was just pushed on me, since I want to keep my AVG anti-virus and Zone Alarm firewall, but not the Zone Alarm anti-virus?

    • zonealarm ON

ZoneAlarm offers both its ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall and ZoneAlarm Free Firewall. If you would like to run your own separate antivirus program, you should just uninstall ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall then install ZoneAlarm Free Firewall.

    • I just turned off ZA’s anti-virus and left the firewall on. With AVG I turned off the firewall and use the anti-virus. I think we need to “blend” these 2 products together.

  42. BRNDRDS ON

With Zonealarm 2012 firewall&antivirus some program’s won’t work properly or not at all like Rocket Dock and Desktop Tray Clock. Tried it twice on XP (not yet on Windows 7)
Went back to the ZA 10 version with Avast, things were OK again.
    What could be the problem?

It was also impossible to reinstall these failing programs under ZA.
Suppose they were blocked of corrupted by ZA.
Have been using ZA for years.

Now its a combination, what if I decide to run the Firewall alone wit third party Antivirus?

    • joe ON

I run ZA Internet Suite with the AV turned OFF. Along with it I run AVG Internet Suite with FW turned OFF. I have no issues or conflicts. If the ZA installation is corrupted (and I have had that problem) just re-install ZA clean.

  43. BRNDRDS ON

    Thank you Joe
    Tried that also.
Wasn’t shure about proper working of ZA after disabled AV.
    I have re-installed ZA 2012 twice on a backup with ZA 10.
Both times the problems with previous mentioned programs reappeared. So its something about ZA 2012.
Looked at de the ZA Firewall settings but couldn’t find both programs to be blocked. Perhaps a routine of it?
I’l try it again on another PC.

  44. Cryss Alex ON

    Hello to everyone!
Just installed Zone Alarm Firewall 10.1.079.000 after I noticed many positive reviews from other users.Everything’s fine besides one feature:Internet anti-phishing activity is green but concerning to on/off options seems to be death.Honestly, I’m really bit confused whether this section works properly.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
    Win XP, SP 3, 32bit, Avast 7 .

  45. joe ON

ZA is at my point now, just “ok”. I still can get Web Security to stay “OFF” even though I’ve unchecked all the boxes in the ADVANCED tab.
I’d also like to see the block all internet traffic control back. AVG has it so why can’t ZA?

I’m almost at the point to just ditch ZA even after spending on license renewals for 1 and 2 year terms and stick with AVG.

  46. Joni ON

    Hi!

I updated the ZoneAlarm firewall to Antivirus+Firewall (10.2.047.000) and now want to check if problems with my XP sp3 have something to do with combination of two antivirus progs.

So I tried to uninstall ZoneAlarm but add/remove programs gives this message: Your system doesn’t meet the installation requirement.

Is there any other way to uninstall ZoneAlarm Antivirus+Firewall ? Or why the Windows-add/remove doesn’t allow me to uninstall it?

    • zonealarm ON

      Hi Joni,

You should not have two antivirus programs running on one PC, as the two antivirus software will fight each other and cause undesired performance.

  47. Mike ON

I installed zonealarm, I was surprised to get the antivirus, so I disabled it and lived with that nag screen. Then I brilliantly decided to take it off and install zonealarm without AV. It almost killed my OS (XP professional). I lost the icons and task bar. I had to work for 4 hours to get things back. It tried everything, until I discovered that zonealarm was conflicting with something on my computer and taking about 5 minutes to initialize. I have been using zonealarm for 6 years now, so I thought to myself…I trust this product, let me give it another chance. So, I clean installed it, but again it almost killed my OS. I had to go to safe mode, take it out of msconfig, then uninstall it in normal mode. I gave up on zonealarm…too sad, when a company upgrades to bloated horrible software (reminds me on windows Millenium and Vista). Go back to being lean and mean zonealarm.

    • zonealarm ON

Did you uninstalling those conflicting programs before installing ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus again? We have our products go through many testings and QAs before releasing it to the public, and we have not seen any of our test machines being almost killed.

    • I think at this point Mike your XP OS has something wrong with it. I’m still run a clean install of XP with ZA and haven’t had any issues.

It might just be the time to starting thinking (if possible) jumping to Windows 7.

  48. ZoneAlarm just flagged AVG and deleted it’s main file as a virus. How do I disable the antivirus part of ZA? I just want it as a firewall.

    • zonealarm ON

If you’re running ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, it should not detect AVG has a virus because ZoneAlarm Free Firewall does not include an antivirus.

If you’re running ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall, that too should not delete any file from AVG. It will, however, sniff out that you have two conflicting antivirus software on your PC and prompt you to take action.

      • I’m running the ZA/AVG combo and neither one of the products deleted each other. ZA told me there was an AV conflict, but I disabled ZA’s AV since I like AVG’s better.

        • Karin Brenig ON

          hi Joe,

I had the same problem, and went back to ZoneAlarm version 10.1 now.

But there is also a way to make sure ZoneAlarm doesn’t mess with AVG.

Click on the left panel there in the main menu.
Make sure you disable all three parts of the ZoneAlarm Antivirus stuff.

In my case I had the scheduled scans running weekly, which is why this thing killed my AVG every week until I found out what was happening.

Just make sure that it says “next time to run: never”.

You also may have to uninstall and re-install your AVG after that.

          Good luck!

  49. confused ON

Had ZA and all of the sudden I can’t get IE to work. Tried to shut down, restart, no luck……. uninstalled za, now using just windows firewall & defender = IE ok now Why???? * I have windows 7

    • zonealarm ON

Was there a chance you tweaked the configuration on your ZoneAlarm? If so, click on Tools-> Preferences-> Reset to Default.

  50. Karin Brenig ON

Well, after having to re-install my AVG twice, because ZoneAlarm’s version 10.2 deleted a file called avgcorex.dll – which ZA calls a “virus”, I now went back to ZA version 10.1 which didn’t have that crazy antivirus built in with no good way to turn it off.

If I wanted antivirus from ZA, I’d be fine – but I prefer my antivirus to be AVG.

    • zonealarm ON

Please make sure you aren’t running an antivirus software from AVG and ZoneAlarm at the same time. Doing so will cause conflicts and undesired performance on your computer.

      • Karin Brenig ON

        Yes, I noticed that.

I don’t appreciate the “forced” installation of your ZoneAlarm antivirus with version 10.2 – which is why I removed that, went back to Zonealarm version 10.1 (the last good one which didn’t attempt to “hijack” antivirus functionality my computer without my consent).

I suggest you offer an option during installation of your ZoneAlarm product, for customers who simply want a firewall and nothing else, specifically no extra antivirus.

It would be nice, if your software would ask, if I want (or don’t want) to have antivirus from ZoneAlarm.

Other than that, I still think Zonealarm is a very good free firewall.
We’ll just have to leave it at version 10.1 forever, if we also like to have AVG running.

        Thank you.

  51. I have very happily used ZA for nigh on 15 Years now, and NEVER RECEIVED A SUCCESSFUL ATTACK. YEA ZA!

I just got a new Win 7 laptop, and attempted the STANDARD download of the free product – but it failed at less than 10% with out reporting a specific error – 3 times.

I greatly appreciated the post from Lee Binder about a “full install”. I downloaded and installed SEEMINGLY OK on first try, but with a single error:

    The program or feature
    “\??\C:\…….\AppData\Local\Temp\{907A1104-E812-4b5c-959B-

E4DAB37A96AB}\AFFSetup64-Ithrmont-en-1001.exe” cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit windows compatible version is available.

The installation completed, but is this error an issue?

    • zonealarm ON

Are you trying to download ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall or ZoneAlarm Free Firewall? You may be getting a hang up if you did not uninstall pre-installed third party PC security software and reboot your PC before installing ZoneAlarm. Please uninstall those applications first.

  52. Hi, I keep getting reminders to update ZA eveytime I login, but evertime I say yes to update it says my operating system is not compatible. I have been using zone alarm free edition for years and I have Vista currently. Why does it keep asking me to update and then tell me I can’t ?

    • zonealarm ON

Make sure you meet the minimum system requirements. You may need to update your Service Pack (SP).

  53. I have been quite loyal to ZA in the past years. I recommended it friends and family and up to now had only good things to say about it. Until now. I don’t think I have been paying too much attention to what ZA does, it was working for me and it was all I needed to do.
I finally got my website hosting and by following instructions was setting up the webdisk in cpanel. I wasn’t able to do so and found out I needed port 2077 or 2078 open. No problem I had always been able to open a new port in ZA even though I haven’t done so in quite some time. To my surprise I can’t find any way open it manually in my free ZA. I don’t know if I am doing something wrong or ZA suddenly just decided to make my life complicated. I want a good free firewall and ZA is one, but I also like to be able to have control over what I do . SO far, ZA has been very good at this, I could set different permissions for programs, I could manually set my security zones, I could… well open ports. I still want to be able to do so. Maybe a big number of the general public prefers to have their food chewed and digested before they consume it, but there are many that don’t and up to now ZA had been great at catering for both kinds of people. I guess it is not so anymore and I need to find another firewall?

I just attempted to update Firefox 15.0 to the new 15.0.1. It is not compatible with ZA. So since I can’t find a safe download of the old Firefox I am stuck with IE, which I hate, until ZA adjusts it.

    • zonealarm ON

Firefox pushed updates at an extremely fast rate. Rest assure, we are constantly working on making sure our ZoneAlarm products are compatible with browsers such as Firefox.

  55. I’ve been running FF 15.0.1 and haven’t had any problems.

Like I tell a lot of the folks who had their PCs fixed by me, if an update install doesn’t work, go for a clean install. Better yet, fully uninstall the program and start again from scratch.

  56. please post the steps to allow remote desktop to come though in the free version, 10.2
Other than looking at the log-viewer and choosing the event and “adding a zone”. That is fine if only one computer (IP) is going to remotely access the computer with ZA on it. Problem is IPs may change.
Basically want to know how to add, or open, a port in ZA.

I do miss the setting that were previously offered in v9.

    • zonealarm ON

Currently, the ability to open a range of ports of IP addresses in our products is unavailable. However, you can try TeamViewer, which is a remote access application that works with ZoneAlarm.

      • Thank you for your reply, I will try that app out (used it once before to help my Dad).
Did you used to have this ability in ZoneAlarm 9? On my prior PC, I had 9 running and could remote into it from various PCs.
Is this something that will be added to 10?
        thanks again.

Re.: free firewall: Why is the full installer being hidden? Why are you trying to force people to use the web-installer? Why not leave the CHOICE to the people, whether they want to install online or offline? I will NEVER install a firewall online (extremely flawed security concept)!

Here some previous comments on this subject:

…No more full installer, to install before connecting to Internet….

zonealarm ON November – 9:41 pm
We found that most people prefer the smaller installer. The full version is very large. If you want the full download you can get it at http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1025_za/zaSetup_101_065_000.exe

There are various reasons for wanting a full/offline installer. A connection with questionable security is one of them. A slow/flakey connection is another, or perhaps you have a limited allocation per month … save your home bandwidth.

    • zonealarm ON

The web installer is offered because it’s faster to download and install. The amount of data that’s downloaded is much less because the web installer only downloads components that are required for your PC’s OS.

A full installer will have to include all components that are never used for your PC. So the download takes much longer and uses more space on your hard drive.

The web installer can resume its download if for some reason it was interrupted. The full installer cannot, you will have to start over.

I update a few computers for pensioners on dialup so need full progs.

      • “The web installer can resume its download if for some reason it was interrupted. The full installer cannot, you will have to start over.”-seriously??? My system stopped and resumed just fine….. I agree with having the option of both, but the offline download is so buried I cannot for the life of me find where you would find the link posted above from your website. Granted, I may have missed it,but I gave a good go at it. I’ve tried 5 times installing it ‘online.’ Finally out of frustration I searched and found this forum, if not for that stroke of luck I would have gone with a competitor. Why is your company making it so difficult to download an offline installer???? The above mentioned reasoning, while sound for having an online installer (if a bit bloated..) has no tangent for why your clearly dissuading people from downloading an offline installer. I have multiple computers that I need to install on and I would rather save time. Not to mention the fact that I wouldn’t want to install online with just the windows firewall in place.

  58. Zonealarm causes a systematic BSOD when I start my PC then plugin the ethernet network cable (Windows 7 Prof SP1 32 bit).
Otherwise I like the program, but it would be nice if this was fixed.

    • zonealarm ON

Do you by chance have another antivirus on your PC? If so, you need to uninstall that first and reboot before installing our ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall. Rule of thumb: ONE antivirus with ONE firewall on ONE machine. Otherwise, you’ll likely experience BSOD.

Hi thanks for all your help

I downloaded the new version of Zone alarm awhile back and had no problems… but now the following Zone alarm message keeps popping up on my screen in a box:-

“zone alarm has detected malware on your computer
    this malware requires advanced disinfection”

but the problem is once I click the button for Zone Alarm to do “advanced disinfection” to remove the malware… later on the same malware keeps coming back and so I also keep getting the same zone alarm pop up messages of:-

“zone alarm has detected malware on your computer
    this malware requires advanced disinfection”

A vicious never ending cycle… Resulting in

1.my computer now locking up freezing
2.internet access for a little while then no internet access
3.Taking ages for computer to now load and come on when I turn it on

plus my computer is now warning me to back up all my files etc because a hard drive failure is on its way…

Appreciate all your help and your reply in advance… Please advise..

It’s easier for us to respond to you via our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/zonealarmfirewall. Please [private] message us there with a screenshot of the message you are seeing. Please also make sure you are running the latest version of ZoneAlarm (not sure what you have since all you mentioned to us was “ZoneAlarm”, and we have multiple products.

  60. I would turn off ZA antivirus. Then I would download http://www.malwarebytes.org/ freebie and let it run a complete scan and see what happens.

After that I would completely uninstall ZA, and re-install it as a clean installation. If that doesn’t clear it up run a checkpoint restore. If that doesn’t work I’m sorry to say it looks like it’s time for a re-install of the OS unless you have an image backup way before this problem occurred.

Still wondering where the “stop internet activity” button is? Looking through the posts, ZA was stating that it would be coming out within a couple weeks & that was over a year ago. Will it ever be brought back?

    • zonealarm ON

In the systems tray at the bottom, find the ZA icon. Right-click on it and you will find “Stop All Internet Activity” there.

My Zone alarm just requested to update which I ( foolishly) agreed to. After updating a request to restart was also agreed to. Now my computer just keeps restarting over and over. I’ve read that this may be a driver problem so started in safe mode to try to remove zone alarm in add/remove programs. But I get the message that it can only be removed after a regular startup. How can I get this remedied?

I installed McAfee antivirus in my 64 bit Windows 7 PC. After that I downloaded and installed this Zone alarm free version…After I click Finish Installation, PC turns to Blue screen… I went safe mode to uninstall Zone Alarm… After that my PC is again normal… Don’t know what is the problem….Can anybody say what is the problem…?
Now I am running my PC without fire wall ….

    • zonealarm ON

The issue here is the McAfee AntiVirus already comes with a firewall. Coupling McAfee Antivirus with our ZoneAlarm Free Firewall will cause conflicts, as you should never have more than one firewall installed on your PC. Rule of thumb: Never run more than one antivirus or firewall on one PC.

  64. zone alarm was perfect until yesterday when I update this..now this has very annoying popup alerts about packages blocked every few seconds..and I can’t found how disable this…this is sad because I’ve used zone alarm for near 8 years but this is very annoying…

  65. I’m trying to update my zonealarm free firewall but keep getting the following error alerts before the install will finish: ToolInit failed; Error Code 127 (1c7eb1e); Error # 1603; Fatal error during installation. What is the problem?

Since updating to 10.1.101.000 I’ve been having problems with vsmon consuming CPUs and slowing down my XP machine. Things are fine after a reboot but within a day vsmon is using upwards of 50 CPU and bogging things down.

  67. Hi I’ma big fan of zone alarm. Since 2005, I have used both paid and free versions of ZA.
Last few months I’m evaluating ZAF on my old Sony SZ laptop that running Win XP SP3.
Last night, ZAF reported there have been found a high risk Malware on computer, “wshtcpip.dll”at c://windows/system32/wshtcpip.dll”.
ZAF pop up windows asked me to save and close all windows and start Advanced Disinfection, so I followed onscreen instructions.
ZAF treated and rebooted my Sony laptop.
On re start up, ZAF reported same Malware founding AGAIN and asked me again to close all windows and asked me to start Advanced Disinfection (this is 2nd time) so I again followed onscreen instruction. My laptop rebooted automatically.

After second rebooting, ZAF AGAIN reporting a high risk Malware founding my computer!!!! I manually closed ZAF this time.
I clicked to open IE and other Windows programmes (itunes, chrome, words, excel and so on) but every time it’s reporting error, “(null) this is not correct Win32 programme”.

Now, I’m extremely confused and puzzled. ZAF must have falsely reporting the malware report and treated a Windows system file as if its a malware. So my laptop gone to completely out-of-working-order now.

I rebooted Win XP, now it AGAIN REPORTING ZAF found a high risk Malware on computer, “wshtcpip.dll”at c://windows/system32/wshtcpip.dll”.
ZAF pop up windows asked me to save and close all windows and start Advanced Disinfection, so I followed onscreen instructions.
THIS TIME ZAF didn’t treat the infected file but every 5 minutes it kept showing me with a pop up “ZA Has Detected Malware On Your Computer” and asked me to “Start Advanced Disinfection”.

Now, I can’t open any of Windows program and ZAF malware warning windows kept pop-up.

What to do now? This is absolutely nightmare!

      Hi Joe,

Our ZoneAlarm Free Firewall does not detect malware or viruses; it detects inbound and outbound traffic. Therefore, the malware pop up you’re getting is not from us. You can, however, try to run an antivirus scan under “Safe mode with networking”. Also, it’s difficult to help trouble issues through our blog. You can private message us on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/zonealarmfirewall.

best way to fix that issue I think will be scan with the “malwarebytes”. Believe me malwarebytes wil detect malware— Good luck
