There are many ways to measure performance of your computer security software. Below are the test results of three key measurements - download size, install time and overall performance.
Symantec Corporation, the parent company for products like Norton Internet Security, hired a third party, PassMark to run performance tests for its security products and their major competitors.
Here are the results as released by Symantec. "Only two Internet Security products had high enough performance across the six test metrics to average 5 stars, ZoneAlarm IS 7.1 and Norton IS 2008." The details of these test results are available online here.
In their "Antivirus & Internet Security Performance Benchmark" report, PassMark Software concluded that "Only two Internet Security products had high enough performance across the six test metrics to average 5 stars, ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.1 and Norton Internet Security 2008." The details of these results are available online at www.passmark.com.

The download size test was performed by Check Point Software in July and August, 2008 using shipping products available from each vendor. ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite had the smallest download size.

The install time test was performed by Check Point Software in July and August, 2008 using shipping products available from each vendor. ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite had the fastest install time.

Download size and install time tests were performed by Check Point Software using the following system. Individual results may vary.
