What is ZoneAlarm Spyware Scanner?

ZoneAlarm Security Scanner is a Web-based scanner that detects and identifies the most malicious types of malware such as spyware and keyloggers that can capture and transmit confidential session data. ZoneAlarm Spyware Scanner is based on technology used for protection by some of the largest enterprise networks and is included in ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite and ZoneAlarm Pro.

What types of malware will ZoneAlarm Spyware Scanner find?

The scanner will accurately identify the most malicious types of applications such as spyware and keyloggers. These types of malware can capture and transmit confidential session data such as passwords and credit card numbers to cybercriminals.

Do I need to have a ZoneAlarm product in order to use the scanner?

No, anyone may scan their PC and view a list of malware found on their PC. However, they will not be able to remove any of the malware. The anti-spyware feature in ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite and ZoneAlarm Pro can automatically identify and remove or disable this malware and more.

What are the system requirements to use the scanner?

The scanner requires Internet Explorer v5.01 or higher with the default Security Setting for the Internet zone at Medium or lower. You can do this by choosing the "Medium" default level under Tools | Internet Options | Security | Internet Zone.

If you have a security setting of Custom and the application does not function, you will need to change settings for "ActiveX controls and plug-ins" as follows:

  • Download signed ActiveX controls (Enable or Prompt)
  • Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enable or Prompt)
  • Script ActiveX controls that are marked safe for scripting (Enable or Prompt)

See the Help file for Internet Explorer for more information on these settings.

Where is the ActiveX file needed for the scanner stored on my PC?

The ActiveX file can be safely removed at anytime within Internet Explorer by choosing Tools | Internet Options from the menu and in the General tab, selecting Settings | View Objects. You may delete the file called "ICSScanner class" to remove the stored application.

Will the scanner work with the Mozilla browser?

While we do not discourage the use of Mozilla, ActiveX is the only technology that can be used for applications such as ZoneAlarm Spyware Scanner, which need access to files on your system in order to run.

If you are unable to use a Microsoft browser, but would still like to run ZoneAlarm Spyware Scanner, please consider reviewing the Mozilla ActiveX Project (not endorsed by ZoneAlarm, LLC) at http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/mozilla.htm.

Many complex and useful applications (such as ZoneAlarm Spyware Scanner, online antivirus scanners, and even Microsoft Update) require an ActiveX control in order to properly access files on your system. ActiveX programs come with digital signatures from the author of the program; therefore, you should only accept ActiveX controls that are signed by companies you trust.

If you are concerned about the security of ActiveX, we recommend doing independent research on ActiveX.
