    Default Determining Port Assignments

I created an Excel application, which retrieve stocks prices from Yahoo.com. To restrict its port access is there a rule of thumb for port assignment? Which port should I assign to Excel? Should I use UDP, TCP, or both protocols? How do I determine which protocol to use for a given program? On the Security tab, Filter Options, should I enable privacy for the program?

Actually I think in your case you need to go to Yahoo and find out what ports they use.

For the Excel application, I decided to assign port 20. I found out via http://www.iss.net/security_center/a...xploits/Ports/ that port 20 is used for ftp-data. Subsequently, I got the idea of which port to assign in general by observing which port(s) are blocked via the privacy advisor alert. At first, I just assign any port and if that is not sufficient or does not work, the privacy advisor indicates which port is not accessible. I then assign the inaccessible port.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) maintains the authoritative list of port number assignments.

You can also find more information about port numbers on my web page
