Default ZA Firewall NOT blocking inbound intrusions

For years, ZA's free firewall worked beautifully on my WinXP machine.
A few weeks ago, after installing an updated version of ZA's free firewall, I noticed that it was NOT blocking any inbound intrusions even though the program shows "All Systems Active" and "Firewall is up to date."

I am using the defaulted settings for this firewall, including HIGH for the "Internet Zone."

I have since completely removed ZA and did a complete clean install, but still not blocking any inbound intrusions.

    Ideas?

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Software Version:7.0
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

Using a router or NAT modem in front of the PC (they will block) all unwanted inbound connections)?

    Guru,
    "Thanks" for the knowledge.
    Two followup points/questions.
We do have a Linksys wireless router in line with our system.
Pardon my ignorance, but would this router tend to block incoming intrusions from getting to ZA as you suggest?

Question two: IF the answer to the first followup question is "Yes," may I presume my system is safe from unwanted incoming intrusions? Or as safe as one can be? In other words, may I stop worrying about the fact that ZA reports not blocking incoming intrusions?

    Your thoughts appreciated...

    Yes, for both questions.
The hardware firewall in the router is about as good as it gets when it comes to blocking unwanted connections (or intrusions).
Just make sure the WEP or WPA is enabled to protect your home wireless network from unwanted snoopers or eavesdroppers.

Yet again....thanks so much for the knowledge.
I feel better already about the security of my machine.
Makes sense, too, because I couldn't believe I've been without a firewall for over a month considering ZA wasn't showing any blocked inbound intrusions and had not gotten zapped by some bad guys.

One last question: how/where do I find/set WEP or WPA on my Linksys wireless 2.4 GHz router?
Does it default to such a setting and/or will it show me somewhere in the manual?

    Please advise.
    Thanks again....

I'm not familar with your specific router, but I will point you in the right directions for general ideas. Just check the router manual or online manuals or even the forum of the vendor (they have often enough FAQ and other users with the same questions). Something like this, <b >answers.com for wap and wep[/b] or <b >Securing a Router and Wireless Connection[/b] or <b >ezlan wpa and wep[/b] and of course small net builder is a good site with news and general information and of course advertising. And, if you are still concerned, you can check your firewall here:

This is the well-known Shields UP!
    website.
