BTW : Before testing System Restore had run the Windows Disk Cleanup, Defrag , Check Dish Local Disk, tick both
Automatically fix system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.Reboot and system clean.

Ran System File Checker " SFC /scannow " and all Windows files intact and in their original versions.

XP SP3 fully patch.

Hi Charles_B,

I too have been having the system restore problem over the past two months or so.

Looking at the CCleaner relase history it seems that version 2.18.889 may be the culprit.

v2.19.889
--------------------------------------------
- Improved support for Google Chrome v2.
- Fixed bug with IE8 cookies.
- Added support for Flash Cookies.
- Added Tool to manage System Restore Files (XP and Vista only).
- Added support to remove Opera Recently Typed URLs.
- Fixed bug which was displaying wrong Total Bytes removed.
- Improved exception handling.
- Fixed virtual function bug.
- Minor performance improvements.

The fourth item on this list gives details.
I suppose that the acid test will be to reinstall this version and try SR again.

Thanks, Hopefully this will be address.

Agent: I can document this information and try testing it later this week and get my results to our development team. If CCleaner is determined to be a factor in the system restore issues we have been seeing, they should be able to work on the issue with the CCleaner staff.

I just now took a peek at the Version History at their site.

v2.21.940 Improved loading of System Restore Tool.

v2.19.889 Added Tool to manage System Restore Files (XP and Vista only).

I'm going to make reference Version History to ticket number to Chat when they come back online.Maybe this will help.

cliff_rigg, Have you tried to uninstall CCleaner.Just to ascertain issue is with CCleaner when using System Restore.

Have a nice Day

Charles_B: Version History at their site. v2.21.940 Improved loading of System Restore Tool. v2.19.889 Added Tool to manage System Restore Files (XP and Vista only). Hope this also helps.

Agent: Hm, let me check which version I have installed here. I did duplicate the system restore failure on this machine in the past.

Agent: It looks like I have version 2.18.878 here. I will try updating to the latest and see if I can duplicate this again.

Hi Charles_B,

Yes, I can confirm that it is CCleaner which is causing the problem for me.

I uninstalled CCleaner, rebooted, took a fresh restore point and then attempted the restore which completed successfully. The first time in months!

Thanks for addressing this problem Charles, I'm sure that your good work will help many people

Thank you for your progress Report..Personally, I do not TRUST Windows Restore Points..

1.) they can easily be corrupted,
2.) if your computer does get Infected by a Trojan/Virus or Malware, The first this The malware does is attach itself to Windows Restore pointsso even if you clean the computer of Malware, your Restore Points may still be infected and re-infect your computer when user..
3.) I prefer a Safer Method of restoring Previous Computer settings..
I use Acronis True Image Backup to make a Full mirrow Imqagebackup to a DVD or External USB Hard drive, every week..
and if needed I can easily Restore files or the complete setup from the Backup..
