    Default Outlook Express will not start if junk mail filter is turned on

    I am unable to start up OE unless I turn off the junk email filter in ZASS. When I try to start OE, I receive the following error: "Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I made no changes or software upgrades recently. Perhaps there was an automatic upgrade in the background to ZASS, but I do not know.

    Others have written here about this problem, but I cannot find a relevant solution. Can someone please help me out?

    Strange, as of today I have started encountering this issue too.
    Exact same symptoms as yours. Took me quite a while to associate the problem with ZoneAlarm. Strange thing is that I'd been using my computer for several hours - including using Outlook Express -
    left it to have dinner, afterwards my wife sits down at the computer and calls out "How come email isn't working??"
    Turning off the Junk E-mail filter option, got things running again for me but now I am slowly getting deluged by spam... !
    HELP!
    Based on a suggestion in another thread to check the Admin Event Viewer, I discovered this error in the event log for each time I tried starting Outlook Express with junk email filtering on...

    I'd like to point out that I have just tried booting into safe mode and removing the entire content of the "c:/windows/Internet Logs" directory (the location of ZoneAlarm files)
    This did not fix the problem getting Outlook Express starting with the junk mail filter turned on.

    great, here we go again.
    Mine just started doing the same thing all over again.

    We had this problem in August and it was fixed by an update.
    All the other solutions didn't work.
    We never received a response from ZA from tech support entries or even this forum when they had to have known it was a huge problem.
    I just emailed tech support, with no expectation of getting a response this time either.

    This very exact same thing happened to me this morning. I've changed nothing, everything worked fine last night. Booted up today, started OE and got the 'generated errors' message. Turned of junk mail filtering and it worked fine. Then I saw this thread and thought maybe there might be some answers....

    I went back into the old problem.
    I think this problem is happening due to some background update while Outlook Express is running.
    We have OE on all the time.
    I uninstalled and reinstalled 6.5.737.000 and manually updated AV/AS.
    I disabled the option to autoupdate anything, and since 6P yesterday, it worked like a charm again.
    I just manually updated AV/AS again with OE off...no problems.
    I checked for program updates just now with OE off, it pulled an update requiring a reboot.
    No problems.

    I think this problem is happening due to some automatic background update while Outlook is running.
    I think I'll keep manual settings now and remember to update it once a day with no other programs running, until we ever hear from ZA that they've fixed this issue once and for all.
    It's nice to see their note at the top that they're trying to stop zero day threats, but it doesn't help if it makes programs that some people must have not operate right.
    I know a lot of people would say to turn off the spam filter, but that's not really possible with several hundred SPAM a day due to business sites.

    Thanks for the help. I'll give this a try and hope that Zone Labs fixes the situation soon.

    I can see you did not get any response whatsoever!
    Sad how badly this company supports their own products!
