Thread: Outlook Express suddenly will not open if Junk Mail filter set to on

Default I'm having the same problem with Outlook 2000 -- went from working fine to hanging every time

I disabled ZASS's junk filter and Outlook 2000 opened fine. I've made no changes to my system so this must be the result of ZA's update. I'll definitely be looking elsewhere when my current subscription expires as this isn't the first time ZASS has caused problems with Outlook.

Well...at least all of you helped me get OE working again if I turn Junk Mail Filter off. I didn't even know that. I sent email to s u p p o r t @ z o n e l a b s. c o m and got email response with case number. Maybe I'll get lucky. This must be related to recent update. It is very disappointing that ZA, knowing of this problem has provided no info at all.

Add my name to the list of users suffering from this issue without a word of "support" from Zone Labs support.

Maybe we're all missing the point here. Maybe it is a *Junk* Mail Filter.
In the UK the email address for support is support@avanquest.co.uk
You'd have thought with the number of folk experiencing this they might be interested by now. A lot of the other posts seem to be about the same thing too or variants of.

I got an answer from tech support today. I'm not comfortable screwing around with msconfig so those of you more experienced than I please weigh in. Here is the response:

Thank you for contacting Zone Labs Technical Support.

    I apologize for the inconvenience.

Click Start, Run, type Msconfig in the run box, and click OK. Once in
Msconfig, click the Startup Tab, and remove the checks from everything.
Now click the Service Tab, place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services."
Now remove checks from everything and click OK. Restart your computer.

Click Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs -> Right click Uninstall and go
to properties. Be sure to say YES to the security check. Under Target you
will see the following line (the actual drive may be different on your
    system):

    "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"

    Change it to:

    "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean

Click Apply and then click OK.

Click Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs -> Left click Uninstall

    Then reinstall the program,

you have a separate issue you would like assistance with, please submit a

    Hey Lotta,
There's a bug in our software and every time it occurs do a complete uninstall and re-install (losing all your settings as you go - unacceptable)? I'd tell them that's a really lazy answer and to take a look at the number of folk experiencing this and suggest they do something proper about it. I doubt they even read your question, let's just cut and paste this...
That seems to be their answer to everything. Beginning to wonder if they have any technical support at all...
    David.

The trouble with this solution is that (even if it works) it requires one to be on the internet with no working firewall, however briefly.
I do not consider that to be acceptable.
In fact, a similar issue with Symantec (with a similar recommendation, that I exist on the net for several minutes with no firewall) was what prompted me to migrate to ZA.

    I
moved to ZA suite four days ago on two machines - a Dell desktop and an IBM laptop.
After 3 days this problem came up on the desktop, but not yet on the laptop.
Both machines have XP Pro, SP2, and ZA installed from a CD (registered and updated immediately after installation).

My case of this problem is slightly different than those reported here in my case Outlook Express simply does not launch and there are no error messages.
The problem goes away if one disables junk filtering, as reported.

BTW, oddball problems like this sometimes occur because of the improper removal of conflicting software.
For example, using Add/Delete to remove Norton products does not clear some registry settings, and these can conflict with new Norton installations or those of other software.
The solution is to use the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec, http://service1.symantec.com/Support...rc=con_ols_nam.
This executable nukes everything related to any Norton product, and has fixed many problems I have had in the past.
But alas, it did not fix this one.

So, since I am new to ZA and this forum, can anyone tell me if ZA reads this forum and sends out patches?
It does not seem that they accept email.
    Even Symantec does that!

Default REAL SOLUTION - Re: SOLUTION to Outlook Express suddenly will not open if Junk Mail filter set to on

    Please see http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...essage.id=7616
for what I consider a more acceptable solution (Leaving firewall rules untouched and intact)
    Thanks
    Simon
