    Default ADWARE.DROPSPAM...SAY WHAT!!!

I'm a newbie here at the ZA Forum...Hello to Everyone and Everything...and this is my first post. However, you may find my introductory
    posting at least
    baffling if not interesting.

As a back-up (or second opinion) to my Registered
Zone Alarm, I routinely run a Norton (Free Version)
Virus/Spy Scan. Yesterday, Norton detected a threat named Adware.DropSpam which
its Free Version cannot remove. I ran and re-ran ZA, even in Safe Mode, but it failed to detect this Adware thing. In addition to ZA, I ran at least four other anti-spy/virus scanners...all failed to detect anything. It's a small consolation to merely learn that I may
    have the "cleanest" computer in
    Brooklyn!!!...but for this Adware.DropSpam.

Is there anyone out there who could help me with this problem? What is this Adware.DropSpam anyway? Most importantly, how could I rid myself of this ever so elusive junk? Thanks for listening.

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite
    Software Version:7.0

Hi!first of all it would really help you could specify the version of ZASS you are using. We are at 7.0.0337.000. If you have an older version please update it.Be sure your antispyware definitions are updated and your ZA antivirus is updating hourly.Running too many realtime antivirus/antispyware tools can create conflicts, false positives and mulfaction of your ZA. I have see many cases where ZA could not detect/clean malware due to other security tools locking the system/files or folders. Cleaner is your system better your ZA will function. If you use the latest ZASS 7.0337 other spyware tools like adware or spybotS&D will be pretty useless. Here you find some info on your Adware dropspam: http://www.superantispyware.com/definition/passworddll/Probably Norton is detecting some left overs of this adware, but you can download the free superantispyware, updated it and run a scan (http://www.superantispyware.com/down...NTISPYWAREFREE) This is a good application, specialised in removing persistent and nasty infection. If you want an additional spyware tool, please use this one and remove the rest you have installed. Also clean your system and registry with the free ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?f=3)FaxZoneAlarm Security Suite version:7.0.337.000
    TrueVector version:7.0.337.000
    Driver version:7.0.337.000
    Anti-virus engine version:3
    Anti-spyware engine version:5.0.162.0
    Anti-spyware signature DAT file version:01.200705.1575
    AntiSpam version:4.9.1.8211

Thanks for your reply, Fax. I'm indeed using the latest ZA Suite 7.0.0337.000 and this is updated on an hourly basis. You've touched on something that I suspected myself: multiple spy/virus scans conflicting with one another; this may be the problem. Norton may be detecting a remnant (etc.) of adware or malware that was already removed...or something like that. However, I will take your advice and uninstall/discontinue
these other security scanners in place of SuperAntiSpy, which you've suggested.

I DO clean out my registry on a MORE than regular basis and CCleaner is one of my usual "toys" in doing this. Whatever the problem is, it's certainly not a
    cluttered registry...which, of course,
    can only lead to grief.

Thanks again, fax, for your help. I have less than moderate pc experience and I'm always grateful for whatever generous
    advice I'm able to
obtain........ Regards from New York City.

    fax,

Of course the read-out moves fast but I think I've located it earlier and made a note of it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\CURRENTVERSI ON.
Is that of any help? Thanks again.

Well, fax, it was worth a try...I appreciate your effort and interest. I'm going to use SuperAntiSpyware later today (it's off to work for me now) and see what happens. I'll get back to you on this...hopefully with good news.

To fax...and the other one or two people even
    remotely interested in this:

Due to a an unrelated matter, I was forced to perform a Full PC Restore. Of course, the good news is that the DropSpam parasite didn't survive this...and, of course, neither did anything else--including my ZA Suite.
However (although the issue is moot), before this latest disaster, I tried SuperAntiSpy and found it
    to be a
powerful spyware/junk hunter. Even though it didn't catch the DropSpam, it seemed to have caught everything else. Regards.
