Cool ZA can't remove brastk.exe malware > ask malware experts at www.bleepingcomputer.com

Hi-

I'm a long time user of ZoneAlarm. I keep it current all the time. Recently, my PC has been infected with some brastk.exe virus and ZA hasn't been able to clear it. I've tried following the instructions listed here:
http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...essage.id=3787
to no avail. It keeps finding and deleting malware, yet everytime I load up it's still there. I've tried downloading Malwarebytes software, but everytime I click on a link it takes me to some search page and not the actual link. So I saved it on my laptop, put it on a thumb drive and saved it to my PC. As soon as I tried to open it, the computer said "This program is not responding and will be shut down." Great. So it won't let me install programs.

I've tried getting into "regedit", but it says it's locked by the administrator. I've tried changing the settings, and it won't let me.

The virus has taken over, and I am FURIOUS. Is the only option now formatting my hard drive and starting from scratch? I tried checking to see about doing a system restore, but the virus deleted all my previous restore points.

Ideas???

Operating System:Windows Vista Home Premium
Software Version:8.0
Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

Well look a few posts down from your own - you would have seen some reference to "brastk.exe"> click here > http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...essage.id=4897
and I also have additional info, too.
- Did you see these posts?:0 So there are two 'removal forums' mentioned - one by Findley's post and one in my post. These 'removal forums' are expert/ specialists in removal - I strongely urge to sign up to one of them and follow their procedures.
You may need to shut-off 'system restore' during your 'virus/ malware removal process' - the malware can use system restore to come back after removal.

bgstewar,
In addition to NaiveMelody's advice, external hard drive usage may be another issue for you to look at as the source(s) of infection/reinfection.
You indicated you were using a thumb drive.

I've looked at all links and all messages. NO MATTER WHAT, my PC will not let me click on ANY link or install ANY program. Even in safe mode, it won't let me do anything! I've tried transferring programs over to my PC from my laptop and it will not install anything.

I'm losing my mind with this virus! HELP!

So, I've been trying and trying...and this virus won't let me do anything. And now it's randomly shutting down my computer. I've tried all the links provided (thanks, by the way), but anytime I click on a link, a spyware site comes up. Anytime I try to download something, it blocks me from downloading and loads a spyware site. Anytime I try installing a program that I've saved, it blocks me from doing so.

Other than taking my PC into a place and having them charge me $140 (I KNOW!!), or formatting my hard drive and starting completely over, are there ANY other options? Is there some kind of boot disk with virus removal I can load on startup or something?

I appreciate all the advice. I ended up burning the Dr. Web disc as well as the Kaspersky and running both of them as my PC booted up. Dr. Web found a bunch of viruses and deleted them. Kaspersky didn't find any (as to be expected) so I thought everything would be fine.

My computer booted OK and I could access web pages. However, I was missing icons all over my screen (using Rhapsody and Firefox) and my PC was totally unstable and I kept getting error messages when booting up. I got so frustrated that I ended up having to format my HDD and reinstall Vista, which is the biggest PITA ever.

I can't for the life of me figure out where this virus was hiding, but it messed things up royally. It wouldn't let me backup my files and even infected my external HDDs. I was able to burn DVDs worth of data, but not all of it. I lost a ton of stuff, and now I don't know what to do to get rid of the viruses on my external hard drives.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. This is my first, and hopefully last, experience with a virus.
