Default Soft and hard firewalls needed for DSL?

New to DSL. Always used software FW's w/ dialup (ZAP last few yrs). Not sure if the DSL router AT&T is sending (2Wire 2701) has built-in FW, but believe it does.

Is using a hardware (DSL modem or a router) AND a soft FW now almost mandatory from a security standpoint? Or, just a really good idea?

I only have one computer now. Probably will add a 2nd. What kind of ethernet card should I get?

    Thanks for input.

BTW, anyone thinking of getting DSL w/ AT&T, be very sure of what you are getting. They (several sales reps) DID all spin the same tale. Misrepresented the actual NAME (AND speed)of the DSL, i.e., said they were selling "Express" 1.5 Mb/s, when they actually sold me "Basic" - probably to get me to sign up.

I would say yes -use both. The second PC will be protected and the extra card is not required, nor is having the first PC on at the same required. Plus the hardware does provide SPI besides the NAT.

This one falls in line with point of view>

    OK, thanks.

But I also need to get an ethernet card for my present PC to hook up DSL (I believe).

The ten to twenty dollar card will work fine. Most do not need additional software- just install the card and start the PC and it works (and sometimes Windows says I found new hardware).
