Hello
I was just wondering, to what extent are programs like Azureus and the likes safe? With my newly-installed ZASS7, can I be protected from any harm to my PC
if I use Azureus and others?
Thanks

--------------------THERE ARE 2 MAIN RISKS--------------------

(1)THE IP ADDRESS DETECTION

If I am correct, without your IP address a hacker cannot access to your computer. He must know the destination IP address before performing an internet attack.

Using these kind of softwares would "SHOW" your IP address to the whole world. A hacker can easilly find IP addresses with this software. When a hacker gets your IP address, he would start accessing your computer.

BUT, as long as you have ZoneAlarm, you are COMPLETELY safe. ZoneAlarm will block any hacker who try to access your computer.

When you are using Azureus, you are asked to allow "Incoming UDP Ports" through your firewall to maximize the download speed and connection. Doing this might prone your computer to hackers. (In my computer, I haven't allowed it but Azureus is working fine.)

(2) MALICIOUS CODE DISTRIBUTION (Virusses, Spywares, Keyloggers, Trojens and Worms etc.)

I think you already know about this. The files which have been downloaded by these softwares cannot be guaranteed that they are VIRUS-FREE because you download files from other user-computers in all over the world. How do you trust them? I think, more than 50% of the P2P share executable files are INFECTED at least by spywares and keyloggers. (HOWEVER, IT MAY BE OK TO DOWNLOAD MUSIC AND VIDEOS)

Anyway, with the ZoneAlarm Antivirus, you WOULD be safe. But, it MUST BE MENTIONED HERE that thousands of new virusses are "CREATED" daily (Or even more!). They can be mostly distributed via P2P share softwares like Azureus.

These virusses may NOT be have treatments because they can be fresh/new. AFTER A VIRUS IS DETECTED BY ZONELABS, THEY WILL TRY TO WRITE AN ANTI-VIRUS DEFINITION. TO WRITE AN ANTI-VIRUS DEFINITION CODE FOR THE IDENTIFIED VIRUS, IT WILL BE TAKEN A MINUTE OR HOURS OR EVEN MONTHS (OR NEVER)!
IT DEPENDS ON THE LEVEL OF STRONG OF A VIRUS.

CHEERS,

P2P is similar to IRC and mIRC. They have their own special brands of worms, trojans and spyware. Notice most P2P sites have excellent instructions and information about spyware removal? There may be a reason for that.

Also check out Peer Guardian or ProtoWall.
