Read the following two posts. But bear in mind that if I take my laptop with no firewall at all to the internet, it can NOT be exploited. It will get pinged, scanned and probed to death. But it cannot be exploited. It will never reply the attempts or open ports for them.
Because there are no exploits on the laptop to exploit. All ports are closed by hardening the system and the softwares.
So, even though the laptop is highly visible, gets many unwanted connections attempts (that will all fail to establish a connection), BUT they all will still fail and the laptop is infact very safe and secure.
But to do this, it takes experience and knowledge and some effort. Something that not every user possesses or knows.
Just had to add this to get you really thinking and maybe confused.
