    Dear davidbanner:

Your public IP address, assigned to you by your ISP, is a unique number. While it can be forged, the original identifies to the ISP who you are. Most, if not all ISPs use DHCP to assign you an IP address each time you connect to the Internet, for dial-up, or turn on your PC, for broadband. These IP addresses can be different each time or after a certain period of time they automatically change. However, the ISP knows who had what number at what time on their network. This information can be made available to law enforcement by court order.

Hackers employ various means to break into PCs. If they have your IP and know that it is active, they can try port scanning to see what ports are open and this will tell them what services are running on your PC which, in turn, will tell them what software you have running on your PC. Usually, they must employ ping sweeps to find active PCs but if you publish your IP address on the Internet, it makes their job easier. After port scanning and determining what is running on the PC, the next step is enumeration where they try to connect to your PC using an open port and gain access to your PC using: its local shell program: shared files; logon attempts; file system access; etc.. What methods are employed depend upon the hacker's skills and the PC's defenses and how secure the operating system is. A firewall is a major obstacle for a hacker. That is why its your first line of defense. It blocks attempts by ping utilities, port scanners, and vulnerability scanners to obtain information about your PC.

Hoov's post was interesting. He states his worst fear is the script kiddie. Script kiddies have low skill levels and their motivation is bragging rights and recognition which they get by attacking high-profile targets. Their success is due to the automated hacking tools available on the Internet for anyone to use as they see fit, usually published by crackers with excellent programming skills. Crackers motivation is to harm systems or extort money from corporations in return for not harming them. A spy's motivation is financial, targeting corporate networks, and their skill level is also high. A cyberterrorist's motivation is ideological, targets a nation's critical network infrastructure, and their skill level is also high. They also use online fraud and steal credit card numbers in database servers to fund their operations. In information warfare, or state-sponsored hacking, the motivation is to destroy the other nation's military network infrastructure. A hacker's motivation is to improve security and, while they break into systems, they do no harm. Lastly, there is the employee, disgruntled or not, whose motivation varies and whose skill level varies. Therefore, my worst threat agent of these is the cracker. The rest target select computer networks but the cracker could target anyone. A cracker, by publishing a hacking tool, can do incredible harm once script kiddies get ahold of it. A cracker can create new programs that target vulnerabilities on PCs that only he/she knows about. In short, their skill levels can be far above those who are defending a network against an attack.

    Hope this helps.

I just dragged over the text of your last message, right clicked in the highlighted text, then clicked Copy. Then I opened my response message box and put the cursor where I wanted it, right clicked, and clicked Paste. Alternatively, you can use the Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy and paste.

    Hope this helps.
