Let me ask this - will blocking akamai (72.246.0.0 through 72.247.255.255) cause any browser slowdowns or other undesireable effects when I use the internet?

When cached servers are blocked, these could happen:

not only application will fail to update, but also perhaps the windows updates may fail

web pages may not load properly

these will happen if the updates and web pages are located at the akamai server you have listed.

This is what I usually block for akamai (because these are ads and possible spyware/unwanted sites). But there maybe mistakes (or changes) because my list is outdated and needs to be updated:

This list could be expanded or added, but this is the "safe" or a conservative listing.
I found anything else added just causes problems.

If you do go a head and block the akamai in the ZA, then use the Expert instead of the Firewall and set the blocked sites/ranges to log and alert. This way you have been warned if the connections were attempted to the servers.
I have some sites blocked in the ZA in the Firewall, but these are strictly very bad troyan sites and not ads or unwanted sites.
I use a dedicated IP blocker software for blocking off unwanted sites such as akamai servers.

    Best regards.
