Default Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

First off, I am a girl and not particularly well-versed in computer speak.
Secondly, I had an issue with my BT internet connection the other day and so restored it to how it was previously.
I then ran Spybot, Adware, AVG, Windows Defender (or something) and the malicious software thingummy from Microsoft.
On going back on the internet ZoneAlarm asked for permission to allow Generic Host Process (as above) and until agreeing, it would not load the internet.
I have not been asked for permission for this before, and now in the bit on ZoneAlarm where it tells you what programs are running, it has 3 for this Generic Host.
Could somebody kindly help me understand what is happening and whether I have put my computer and details at risk?
I would be very obliged!
Thank you kindlySweepy

Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
Software Version:
Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

Generic Host is your microsoft system services; you need them to access the internet - your fine. Usually, I will get two boxes for generic host in those four top boxes, but three is not extremely off.
You can right click your ZA tray icon, > see "Help" this is your User Guide - will explain most basic functions, settings, customizations and troubleshooting. Hopefully, you have version ZA Free - 7.0.483 you will need this version, due to some problems Microsoft security updates have had on ZA.
>
>
Your doing fine.
NaiveMelody NYC 11-7-08 - All Right Now - Free
