Default vsmon.exe using a LOT of memory!

    Hello,

I don't normally make a point of checking this, so I don't know how long it's been going on, but once in a while I take a look at the running processes in taskmanager, and vsmon.exe's numbers really jumped out at me because I don't recall seeing this before. It was using over 99,000 k worth of memory. I rebooted the computer and it went back down to about 34,000 k. So now a day and an evening have passed and I just ran an antivirus scan. Vsmon.exe is now up to 101,304 k. Again, I have not noticed these high numbers before and I am wondering what is going on.

I had also noticed yesterday that the firewall blocked access to hs2.zonelabs.com. I have never had this alert before, and my software is set to update manually and always has been.

What on earth is vsmon.exe doing all of a sudden, if it is all of a sudden? Or is this sort of thing normal? The computer is shut down every night. I think I would have noticed a number up in the 90's prior to this. I've been using ZASS since February/07. Would it just be using so much memory if there was a lot of internet browsing going on?

I just ran a spyware scan with ZASS, got rid of a couple of tracking cookies, and now the vsmon.exe memory was down to 65,000 k...until I opened up the browser to come and post this, so now it's back up to 66,000 k, but that's still a big difference from 101,000 k. Would the tracking cookies have had anything to do with this?

vsmon is hogging CPU and memory use when email is closed and doing such tasks as a Windows update. I even shut down zonealarm and vsmon soldiers on **bleep**ing the life out of my WinXP PC.

How can we tame this beast?

You know, the weird thing is, I powered up the computer this morning. Vsmon.exe was at 51,000 k. Four hours later, it was at 104,000 k, after some light browsing and downloading 2 e-mails. I ran an AV scan and did some other things, which included resetting ZASS's database (which I have to do every so often, as for some unknown reason it will suddenly just stop logging events. I always back up my ZASS security settings immediately before I do this and then restore them immediately after.) After rebooting from Safe Mode (you have to do the reset in Safe Mode), I think I updated the antispyware. Vsmon.exe was back up to 103,000 k. I ran an antispyware scan. No problems were found. I checked taskmanager, ZASS was at 66,000 k and has been staying around that level ever since.

My computer is able to handle this. I only checked yesterday because I found Outlook Express seemed to be a bit slow to open and that's when I first realized the whopping amount of memory vsmon.exe was using. I don't know why running a scan seemed to drop the memory usage by so much. Anyway, I thought I would ask here to see if this sort of performance is the norm. Maybe it is. ???
