Default ZA Security Suite does not scan downloaded files?

    Hi,

I bought ZA Security Suite yesterday. Having today read an article on Testing Your Antivirus, I downloaded the test files from www.eicar.com

To my surprise Zone Alarm allowed me to download them all without complaint! It was only when I actually entered the folder I downloaded them to that it spotted the first file. The others were only spotted when deliberately scanned.

Why does the Security Suite not scan files immediately after download?

    Kind regards,

    Julian

    Hi!
    try here: http://www.eicar.org/download/eicar.com
    or here: https://secure.eicar.org/eicar.com

    Does it work?

    It works fine here...

    Hi Fax,

Thanks for the quick reply. No change here - ZA still allowed me to download the file without a twitch. It did detect the file when I went to the folder but not until then did it detect it as a virus. Is there a setting I am missing?

    Kind regards,

    Julian

    Hi!
and if you try to save on your desktop?
At least this what I did... may be you are saving not on the main C partition?

Go to the advanced settings of the ZA antivirus/antispyware and check that 'on-access scanning' is active.
Are you running any other security tool doing proxy type of activity?

    Hi Fax,

On access was active and no other software in use.

It was the location. I *never* download to the desktop, preferring to download the file to where I actually want it, in this case E:\Installers\Security. To test I did deliberately choose Desktop and ZA popped up to quarantine the file. I don't see the point or the logic in downloading a file and then having to move it to where I want it to be.

I don't know *why* ZoneLabs made this restriction - I would call it a bug. Surely it would be just as easy to check every file regardless of where the user specified to download it?

    Kind regards,

    Julian

    Hi!
its not just desktop but where your system is... (e.g. C://)
Is your E an attached driver?

    Cheers,
    Fax

    Hi Fax,

C D and E are partitions on the same internal drive. I also have a second internal drive with F and G on it.

    The system partition is C:\

The same question applies though, why should it matter where the file goes? The important question ZA is supposed to answer is 'Does it have a virus embedded in it?'

    Kind regards,

    Julian

    Hi!
its not to bog down your system performance and, in any case, malware is blocked 'on access' (i.e when you open them).
    So you are perfectly safe.

    Cheers,
    Fax
