Default Unable to Access Main Program Screen

I am trying to recover from a "malware" attack which damaged my previous installation of ZA, as well as is preventing me from updating Windows.
Right now, my main concern is that I am unable to "uncheck load vsmon.exe at startup" so I can use the specially-designed zonealarm removal tool and then do a clean install (I've already installed once which hasn't helped).
Clearly, although I thought all the damaging files had been removed, something is lurking somewhere.
I've even cleaned out my Registry, cleaned out all the files, temporary caches, etc.
Perhaps someone knows some DOS that would work or perhaps there's another way to uncheck it?
I am running Win XP Pro SP2 (with almost all security updates), **bleep** Home Edition (just upgraded to the paid version), and Malwarebyte's Antimalware program (also now paid which is the program that discovered the intrusion and deleted the rogue files).
I am an experienced user, having had my own pc for 25 years with only one virus problem during all that time, despite being an early internet user.
    I can't access anything on
    ZA
    screens . . . when I try to open
    the program
all I get is a white screen . . . can't get to the Zones so my entire network is dead; can't uncheck Vsmon, can't do anything useful at all to try to get the program configured.
I've used ZA successfully since it was introduced . . . the only hiccup being when I bought it and that version wouldn't play well with my network.

I would appreciate any useful recommendations

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Software Version:8.0
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

I Strongly Suggest That You Reformat Your Hard Drive
The Microsoft Windows Installation May Have Become Corrupted

I agree with User Stupefy, on the need to reformat your Hard drive, as well as the Need to Update WinXP Fully, including Service Pack 3, and any of the many other updates after SP3..Service Pack 3, provides vastly far superior Windows Security than service pack 2 does..ZoneAlarm Version 8.0 was designed to work better on WinXP SP3, as well as Vista SP1..--------------------------------------------------------

I've accessed Windows Update and all recent updates have been installed.
Please understand, I have no intention of upgrading to SP3 because of other issues too lenthy to go into here.
I am also not going to reformat my hard drive.
Been there; done that; don't need to this time.
    Everything is working except ZoneAlarm!
All thorough scans run by anti-virus and anti-malware say nothing is wrong.
Still, I can only get a blank screen at ZA and can't use my printer because I can't tell ZA that the printer's address is trusted because I can't access any of the configuration screens.
I'll move to another firewall if I have to, but prefer ZoneAlarm.

In that case you may be better off moving on to some other product..as All future versions of ZoneAlarm will be Dependent of Service Pac 3 or SP4 if Miscrosoft continues Support for WinXP..

If in case you ever consider moving up to SP3.

When SP3 first came out, I had Automatic Updates Turn On.It download SP3 and install.I keep computer on all the time. When I got home the computer was in a scandisk mode loop and stating the volume was dirty.Could not get into safe mode.Had to reformat drive.

Download SP3 from Microsoft and burn to disk, turn off anti-virus/spyware in ZAISS reboot and install from disk drive. When very smooth.Later
I created a Windows XP disk with SP3 already installed.Slipstream Service Pack 3 into Windows XP for future reformat if needed.

Also got external drive and Acronis 11 after that.

    Try this:
Uninstall ZoneAlarm From The Windows Recovery Console
I Still Adhere to Reformatting the Hard Drive.....but if you Insist.....
Being that you are an Experienced Computer User I will Skip the Details.
01.) Place the windows CD into the Tray and Reboot the Computer
02.) Boot into the Recovery Console Through the Administrative Account
    03.) At the Prompt type:
    cd c:\ (press enter
    cd program files (press enter
    cd zone labs (press enter
    cd zonealarm (press enter
zauninst.exe /clean (press enter (if this fails then)
    zauninst.exe (press enter
Should the above Fail, you then have the Daunting Process of Removing ZoneAlarm Manually
From Within the Safe Mode Administrative Account:
Assign Yourself Full NTFS Permissions to All the ZoneAlarm Files in Windows Explorer so
that you can Manually Delete them.
Also Show Hidden Files and Folders and Unhide Protected Operating System Files:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\MailFrontier
    c:\Program Files\SonicWallES or SonicWall
    C:\Program Files\Zone Labs
    C:\Windows\Internet Logs
    C:\Windows\system32\ZoneLabs
    Under C:\Windows\system32:
    -vsconfig.xml
    -vsxml.dll
    -vsdata.dll
    -vsdata95.vxd
    -vsregxp.dll
    -vsdatant.sys
    -vsmonapi.dll
    -vspubapi.dll
    -vsinit.dll
    -vsutil.dll
    -vswmi.dll
    -zlcommdb.dll
    -zlcomm.dll
    -**bleep**.datEDIT: z_l_l_i_c_t_b_l_._d_a_t
    -zpeng25.dll
Assign Yourself Full NTFS Permissions to All the ZoneAlarm Registry Entries so
that you can Manually Delete them:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MailFrontier
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs\ZoneAlarm

Then try to Execute the ZoneAlarm Removal Tool
NOTE: This Procedure May Fail Due to the ZoneAlarm Self Protection Features
NOTE: Some of the Files and Registry Keys May Not Exist or may Reflect the Name of the Product in use:
Example, these Files and Registry Keys are for ZoneAlarm Internet Security, You are using ZoneAlarm Free,
so the names might refelect ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro instead.
SPECIAL NOTE: Before you perform the above steps, and after you complete the above setps,
Run these three Microsoft Tools using Internet Explorer, you must accept the ActiveX Controls:
01.) Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (run from web site, do not download)
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx
02.) Windows Live OneCare Online Safety Scanner - Protection Scan (antivirus/spyware scan)
    http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/howsafe.htm
03.) Windows Live OneCare Online Safety Scanner - Clean Up Scan (hard drive and registry cleaner)
    http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/cleanup.htm
Another Excellent Online Scanner is the ESET Online Antivirus Scanner, you must accept the ActiveX Control:
    http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/index.php
VERY SPECIAL NOTE: WHEN ALL IS COMPLETED, MAKE SURE WINDOWS UPDATE WORKS!
    Good Luck.....

Hi!on top of allno security tool will be able to defend you if you run them on a vulnerable paltform. So, expect to be infected again very easily...SP3 fixed hundreds of vulnerability. If you don't move to SP3 better you shift OS (MAC? LInux?)Cheers,Fax
