Default Anti-spyware update fails in ZoneAlarm Pro 6.1.744.001

I have an old Pentium III that I have not wanted to retire and still works perfectly for the tasks it is intended for. It is connected to the Internet and so I use ZAP to keep it safe.

Here is some of the information on this system:

Operating System: Windows 98-SE (Second Edition)
    Product Name: ZoneAlarm Pro
    Software Version: 6.1.744.001
Anti-spyware engine version: 4.1.70, DAT file version
    Last Update of Anti-spyware 10/13/2007

Since 10/13/2007 I have received the following error message when trying to update the Anti-spyware components of ZAP:

    Anti-spyware update failed.
    Problem: an unspecified error occurred

When downloading the updates, the Update Status dialog box appears to be downloading the updated definition file. The progress bar progresses normally to the end of the status bar. But at the point the downloaded definition appears to be actually installing the files, the failure occurs.

I found the following threads on this subject on the ZoneAlarm Forums:

    "ZASS 6.1 Anti-Spyware Update Failed since 9/30/2007"

"Anti-spyware update fails in ZoneAlarm Pro 6.1.744.001"

For what it is worth, in the message thread above, it is indicated that:

"But ZoneAlarm still support ZoneAlarm Pro 6.1.744.001 on Windows 98 SE (according to their statement)."

    I have two questions:

    1. Is ZoneAlarm Pro 6.1.744.001 still have a functional Anti-spyware component?

    2. If it is functional, does anyone have a clue on how I should proceed to fix this problem?

Thank you to anyone who can help me with this problem...

I found the solution to my problem!

    The solution is as follows:

This may be due to damaged or out of date XML files.

    1. In the Worldwide Downloads list at
    2. In the Keywords box, type "Microsoft XML Parser 3.0 Service
Pack 7" and then click Go.
    3. In the list of available downloads, click Microsoft XML Parser
    (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7).
    4. Run the file downloaded
    5. Follow the instructions on your screen.
    6. Reboot.
