    Default Sony Rootkit Trojan

    Hello ,
I have recently acquired a Sony Rootkit Trojan (probably from an old CD) . It is quaranteened , but the info I found (from ZoneAlarm) is that it's not safe to just delete it using zONE aLARM SECURITY SUITE7.0.408.000. Is this outdated info , or is it still relevant ?
    Thanks

    Dell PC
    Windows XP Pro

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

You mean the Sony CD rootkit which got withdrawn because of consumer backlash?Should be OK to remove it using ZA but I've never heard about the problem you're talking about. This is a link to Sony's official remover for their own spyware if you want to use it.http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html

    Thanks for your reply.
I assume I picked it up from a (2nd hand) CD of my son's which was originally released a few years back (Tom Raider).
The information I got was when I checked for 'more info' , which then sent me to ZoneAlarm's info pages - where it said it was too risky to just delete it. Maybe it's a page from the time the Rootkit was current.
I'll try what you've suggested. Thank you for your advice

Sony rootkit trojan can be removed with this tool or this tool.

Just release it from the ZA quarantine first before using the installed rootkit tools.

Sorry Guru Jeruselem. Maybe I should have refreshed the thread before finally posting. I would have seen your post.

I'll join the fun Instructions how to remove, two years old, but interesting reading, pictures and links

And here's another variant, this one, a freebie, from the Sony-USB flash memory sticks.
