Default The 3 big pigs. Vsmon and 2 ScanningProcess

Running ZA SS 7.0.362.000

I thought I could live with vsmon, and 2 scanningprocess making my machine starve for CPU periodically but it is becoming too much of a hassle.

If I do a system backup while these 3 processes are running, it takes 3 hours. If I stop them, the backup takes 15 minutes. The Internet is shut off and the only application running on the system is the backup. I monitor process CPU usage and these 3 are using 90 - 100 %. This is not acceptable.

Another problem is that I cannot always stop them by shutting down ZA. Sometimes I have to re-boot and stop ZA to stop the 3 processes. They can never be 'Kill'ed.

ZA needs to do one or more of several things that will help.

1) Lower the dispatch priority of these processes.
2) Give me configuration to control their operation.
3) Allow me to kill them if they don't stop when ZA it terminated.

I read sticky topic 'cpu hogging'. No help there.

I did submit the problem to Tech Support. This issue is found in lots of other tech forums on the Internet so I am not the only one with the problem.

Operating System:Windows 2000 Pro

Hi!ZA developers are aware that ZASS has a big memory footprint and this may be tackle in future updates. However high CPU may be related to software incompatibilities between ZASS and resident software. In order to troubleshoot this type of problems is usually suggested to start your system selectively. This way:1.) Click Start -> Run
2.) Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
3.) Once in MSConfig, click the Startup Tab
4.) Remove the checks from everything except ZLClient
5.) Click the Services Tab
6.) Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
7.) Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet
Monitor, and click OK.
8.) Restart your computerHow does it work? Do you still get high CPU. If not, slowly put back your services/boot items up to when you find the culprit and report to ZA labs.
NOTE: You can place your computer back into a normal startup process by
going back into msconfig and choosing the Normal Startup option on the
General tab.Cheers,Fax

Thanks for the quick reply.

>>ZASS has a big memory footprint

ZA on my system is using about 110 megs address space. I have adequate memory. My problem is CPU.

I had been eliminating some Services, looking for a change. I had forgotten how easy it is to do tests using MsConfig. I did a series of tests, removing 'run' items and Services, recording CPU usage for all ZA processes and found nothing.

However, I think I have found the problem. I have various USB devices that appear and go away during the day. Some are disk drives, some appear to be disk drives. One is a very large disk drive I use for backup. Running backup was the biggest problem.

So, I removed them as scan targets and the problem seems to be reduced to where I can live with it. I still shutdown ZA when I do the backup but now all the ZA spawned processes stop so my backup runs fast.

Cheers,

My enthusiasm was premature. The test I was doing looked better and my ZA shutdown for backup problem seems to be gone. However, normal activity CPU usage is still way too high.

I have a second, very similar, machine running ZA SS that does not have the problem. So I decided to do some comparison.

Both machines:

1) Reboot
2) Wait 10 minutes
3) Start Firefox browser

CPU usage to start Firefox:
vsmon :03 vs :02
ScanningProcess :17 vs :01
ScanningProcess :10 vs :01

What is a big difference between the two machines?
The piggy one is running Version 7.0.362.000 the lean one 7.0.337.000.

Hi!yes, 362 has issues... developers are working on a fix.Just revert your 362 to 337 and do not update unless you receive a notification from the ZA automatic update feature (autoupdate has been revoked for 362). And for future version, just don't manual update as soon as a new version is released but wait that automatic update server are activated and you are warned to update. This will avoid you any unexpected last minute bug introduced in latest versions.Cheers,Fax

Thanks. That is what I had decided to do.

Just for fun, I did an I/O trace on the two machines to compare.
Version 362 is doing about 20 times are many I/O ops as 337.
Javascript, JARs, DLLs, etc. Every file connected to Firefox, every time it starts.

"Just revert your 362 to 337"

How do I do that?

I have been changing lots of things since my machine started running slowly (and another problem happened).

Simply going back to a restore point ain't gonna cut it.

How can I get 362? 337 is eating me alive with the scanning processes.

Thanks

Oops!

I am running 337 (so much for posting while being interrupted by several folks).

IT has the ScanningProcess pair eating me alive.

Now what?
