    Default v 7.0.408.000: Trouble updating and startup option disabled

    I just installed ZA Anti-spyware v 7.0.408.000 after trying a free competitor for 3 days and regretting it. But I'm having two small issues:

    1) When I click "Check for Update" in preferences I get a message that reads "Cannot determine your currently installed version. Your program may be installed incorrectly."
    I don't need to reinstall, do I? Is it likely that I did something wrong during the installation?

    2) The check box for "Load ZoneAlarm Anti-spyware at startup" in preferences is disabled. Does this indicated a problem? I understand that vsmon.exe loads as a service, but I'd like to have the GUI startup also.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

    I suggest you do a clean uninstall (see below), then install 7.0.462.0 which is the latest version and which has many fixes.__________

    Reboot Safe Mode (without networking)
    Append " /clean" (without quotes) to the uninstall shortcut target
    Uninstall
    Reboot Safe Mode (without networking)

    Run virus/spyware scan: requested by ZoneAlarm (enables hourly signature updates)

    I should've answered your previous question. "Load ZoneAlarm Security Suite at startup" should be checked, but this is the default set during installation. It sounds like you have a courrupted database which can be corrected quickly. Nevertheless, version 462 fixes so many problems that I'm still recommending you install it.

    OK, thanks for the advice. However, the version that I have installed was a free offer from Check Point. Will I still be able to use my current license with the version you mention?

    I'm sorry, I'm not able to answer that one. Here is the link for the download histories: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...Histories.html. I believe the free version is either ZoneAlarm Anti-virus or ZoneAlarm; the first one has version 462, the second only goes up to 408 and is not recommended. Hopefully, user SlyFox or another knowledgeable individual is monitoring this and has the answer.

    If you still have the downloaded .exe for your free version 408, you could try installing the 462 version and using your license code. If it doesn't work, you could reinstall 408 (a lot of work, I know, but you will have no problems if you follow my prior instructions). I'm thinking the license is transferable because I've used my ZoneAlarm Security Suite license for multiple installs to fix problem and upgrade to new versions and it always works. Of course, mine is a paid version.

    OK, thanks for the info. I tried my free license and it didn't work. I don't think it's worth it for me to try to work with v408, since the reinstallation (after following your instructions) didn't solve the problem. I'm just going to have to get a paid license.

    You're welcome! I think you'll really enjoy the latest build (7.0.462.000) of the product. I've tried several other security suites (not all) and find ZoneAlarm more intuitive, effective, and less of a drag on system resources. Plus, for those of us lucky ones, 462 has no apparent problems. That may sound obvious but I came from another manufacturer's product that I was with for three years while suffering from serious problems the whole time.
