    Default Anti-virus never stops scanning

Here's a problem that began after I did a "Reset"
I have my anti-virus scan scheduled for Daily at 2:00 A.M.
By 9:00 a.m., it is still running, and still scanning the C:\ drive. If I don't stop it, it out paces the Energizer bunny.
Here is a list:Scanning for Virus

    -- never seems to end

-- last stop after 10 hours, still on C:\drive, but perhaps cycled through again

-- after stopped, "Duration" shown as 335467:22:48

-- when paused, "Duration" timer continues

-- all new problem after "Reset"
    Scanning for Spyware

-- not until virus scan complete

    -- quickly done

-- when paused, "Duration" timer continues
    Thanks,
    folsombob

Can you tell from the scan window whether it is stuck on one particular file?
Which version of ZASS are you using?

If a reset doesn't work, then I would suggest a clean uninstall followed by a reinstall. Follow these directions:

    Download ZoneAlarm:

    www.zonealarm.com

    Support

    Product-Specific Support (click on product)

    Release History
    UNINSTALL
    --------------
Append " /clean /rmlicense" (without quotes) to ZoneAlarm uninstall shortcut target
    Reboot Safe Mode (without networking)
    Uninstall ZoneAlarm from shortcut
Reboot Safe Mode (without networking): reboot requested by ZoneAlarm
Create file ZADelete.bat and edit with Notepad
Copy and paste the following lines into ZADelete.bat, then save and exit:
    RMDIR /S /Q "%PROGRAMFILES%\Zone Labs"
    RMDIR /S /Q "%SYSTEMROOT%\Internet Logs"
    RMDIR /S /Q "%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\ZoneLabs"
    ECHO Y | DEL /F "%TEMP%\*"
    ECHO Y | DEL /F "%SYSTEMROOT%\Temp\*"
    ECHO Y | DEL /F "%SYSTEMROOT%\Prefetch\*"
    Double-click ZADelete.bat
Create file ZADelete.reg and edit with Notepad
Copy and paste the following lines into ZADelete.reg, then save and exit:
    REGEDIT4
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ZAMailSafe]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs]
    [-HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Zone Labs]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsmon]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsdatant]
    Double-click ZADelete.reg
    Empty Recycle Bin

    INSTALL (SAFE MODE BOOT)
    -----------------------------------
    Install ZoneAlarm
Reboot Normal Mode: reboot requested by ZoneAlarm
Anti-virus / Anti-spyware > Update Now (repeat until no further updates)
Run virus/spyware scan: requested by ZoneAlarm (enables automatic signature updates)

Pardon me, but I think that is crazy and irresponsible to advise people to start digging around in the registry. One false move and we'll all have a permanent uninstall of everything.
    No.
The problem is with ZoneAlarm -- this is not unlike the advice given from Tech Support for a faulty Trend Micro - PCcillen (sp), and why I uninstall it
    -- permanently and went elsewhere.
    No.
    The problem is with ZoneAlarm

    Hi!
have you tried to scan in SAFE MODE with networking?

Boot in SAFE MODE with networking
    Manually open ZA
    Scan your system

If it does not hang then there is something blocking ZA to scan, for example, conflicts with other software accessing files on your system. If it hangs also in SAFE MODE then two options: 1. Corrupted ZA install 2. A problem on the HD (corrupted partition) or corrupted files.

    Cheers,

    Hello Fax
    Would you please clarify:
    "Scan your system
If it does not hang then there is..."
    and
"If it hangs also in SAFE MODE then..."
It doesn't hang except it does take longer on some of the .cab files. Typically, in 7 - 9 hours it scans about 250k to 350k files.

Hi!thank for verifying... yes, in SAFE MODE it may be slower than usual. Also KAV scanner is slow on compressed files (cab, zip, rar) since it decompress on-the-fly and scan all elements in it.If you have a lot of compressed files better to exclude then in 'scan targets' (advanced option of the ZA AV/AS tab)If the scanner works in SAFE MODE than there is something running in normal mode blocking the operation of ZA.Try to boot your system selectively (only ZA and standard MS programs/services) and see if it still work fine. This way (in normal mode):1.) Click Start -> Run
2.) Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
3.) Once in MSConfig, click the Startup Tab
4.) Remove the checks from everything except ZLClient
    5.) Click the Services Tab
6.) Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
7.) Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet
    Monitor, and click OK.
8.) Restart your computerNOTE: You can place your computer back into a normal startup process by
going back into msconfig and choosing the Normal Startup option on the
    General tab.
If the scan does not hang, slowly enabled unchecked items in the boot process (starting from the services and then move to the startup items) by a group of 4-5. This way you should find the culprit. If it hangs with selective startup then there is a problem with some system files/services not active when you boot in SAFE MODE. But very difficult to troubleshoot!Cheers,Fax

    Hi again, Fax
    I tried something different.
I did a manual scan of each drive, C:\ first, and then the other two on the same scan (in sequence).
C:\ took about four (4) hours, and the other two took about the same combined, for a total less that the scheduled scan.
With the scheduled scan, at the ten (10) hour mark, it was still scanning the C:\ drive, and never appeared to get to the other two.
I wonder if it is possible that the scheduled scan did C:\, then the other two, and then looped back and started over again.
As far as I can tell, there is no report with ZoneAlarm, other than a highly simple report summary, and no way to save any report, or to go back and read it after the fact.
So. If the anti-virus will scan each of the drives manually, I would think there is Not a file upon which it hangs and delays the scan for 10 hours.
What do you suppose is happening with the scheduled scan?
    Thanks,
    folsombob
