Default AV comparison test

www.virus.gr tested a large selection of Antivirus programmes - but I don"t see ZA here in this list. Or does it hide behind another commercial programme ? Also, I don't understand whether the test concerns the quality of detection or of elimination.

    Cheers

Hi!ZA uses the Kaspersky SDK engine so the detection will be similar to Kaspersky or eScan that uses also the KAV engine.Cheers,Fax

A good news is that it appears the SDK engine now has the same unpack engine as the Kaspersky 8.0 products, which means more detection of nasties. Well, I guess it still lacks the emulator, but it doesn't make a huge difference I believe.
What I am more concerned about is whether ZA can disinfect detected threats the same way Kaspersky can, because disinfection ability varied between Kaspersky versions 6, 7 and 8 and the SDK engine seems to be based on 6 and 7 right now. There's more to it than just the engine though, the drivers matter too, ZA's drivers seem good so it shouldn't be a problem.

Indeed, but you should consider the Suite and its diffent features are proprietary in both products. I.e. the ZA OS firewall, the ZA antispyware, the spysite blocking.. etc. i.e. strenght of a product cannot be judged from just one module (i.e. the detection of the AV engine). ZASS provides for a solid protection as it does Kaspersky.Thanks.Cheers,Fax

Does anyone know here of a recent test that directly measures the capacities of ZA ? And which distinguishes also between detecting and treating ?

Hi!you can readmanytests.. but remember that any test is biased... towards one or another product or a certain methodology or another...The best test is on your machine by using it... and if you feel safe with it.If not, better you choose another product you can trust.ZASSgot for example, the VB100 awards on VISTA...Check the PCMAG review..:http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2329468,00.aspALL mainstream products can provide you with solid protection, the choice is more based on your personal taste and impressions...Cheers,Fax

I was checking the bases downloaded for Kaspersky 8.0 and the SDK engine for ZoneAlarm. Earlier there were one or two extra unp***.kdc files downloaded for Kaspersky 8.0 products (*** is a number starting from 000), but now I noticed the numbering of all such files is the same, i.e. the unpack bases downloaded are the same in number for both the SDK and KAV engine. I did not check the file sizes yet, but any difference might also be down to the different database (KLAVA engine vs. SDK engine) rather than an actual difference in unpacking.
So, for practical purposes I assume the unpack engine is exactly the same. The emulator built into KAV 8 *might* have some generic unpacking abilities (not confirmed), but I doubt they are significant enough to warrant huge differences in detection rates or types of files scanned.
