    Default Anti-Spyware won't update

I have done many "complete" uninstalls and reinstalls of ZoneAlarm Security Suite version 8.0.298.035 trying to get the spyware defs. to install but to no avail. In the progress window I usually get a ZA message that says, Anti-spyware cannot decipher spyware: database:failed to process input file C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\spyware0.dat .

In my ZA log file there is a note that says, Anti-spyware attempted to receive the latest dat file and/or engine updates but failed .

The only other thing that I can add is that the download part of the process happens in a micro-sec. Then after watching the lack of progress meter for 15-20 mins. the spyware installation process fails.

    Please Help!!!

    Default Re: Anti-Spyware won't update

    Hello Bear,
    Good God,
there is somebody else out there with the same problem. I thought I was the only one.Everytime I try to update the antivirus updates fine but I recieve the same message as you do,
Anti-spyware cannot decipher spyware: database:failed to process input file C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\spyware0.dat .
Also, does your scan work only for the antivirus and not the antispyware?
    Well I tried this forum
thing withno respone from anyone to my problem except one person told me
to contact ZA support, Whoppee do,I knew that one. Well anyway, I did
e-mail the ZA support team and the reply I recieved I pasted belowfor your viewing pleasure, but guess what, it didn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going crazy with this problem.I e-mailed them back that it didn't work and am awaiting a reply.
    Good Luck friend,PC

Thank you for contacting ZoneAlarm Technical Service.

From what I read, you are not able to update your antispyware definitions.

Please follow the steps in the document below to run a 'clean' uninstall of ZoneAlarm, then download and reinstall the latest version by using the links provided.

    This applies to

All ZoneAlarm Products version 4.0 and above

    Summary

I need to uninstall ZA version 4 or later OR, I received this message from
    technical support

    Solution

Please make sure that you have the latest version downloaded first:

    http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en...e-download.htm

01.) Right click the ZA icon (if present) and choose shut down
02.) Click on Start -> Programs -> ZoneAlarm
03.) RIGHT-click on Uninstall ZoneAlarm Security, then select Properties
04.) Under Target you will see the following line (the actual drive may be
    different on your system):

    "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"

    Change it to:

    "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean

(add a space and then the /clean)

05.) Click Apply, then OK to save the new command line.
06.) Click on Start -> Programs -> ZoneAlarm -> Uninstall ZoneAlarm
    Security
07.) Click Uninstall to run the uninstaller, and choose OK or yes to any
    security alerts that pop up.
08.) Say Yes when being prompted for the removal of all files.
    09.) Reboot when prompted
10.) Go to Start -> My Computer (XP) or open My Computer from your
    desktop.
11.) Double click the C: drive
12.) Double click the Windows folder (it may also be called WINNT in some
    cases)
13.) Locate and delete the Internet Logs folder here
14.) Double click the System32 folder
15.) Locate and delete the Zone Labs folder here (if present)
    16.) Close this window
17.) Clear your Windows temporary file cache by following the steps below:

    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type %temp% and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them
    - Empty your recycle bin

18.) Reinstall using the file you downloaded earlier
