Default Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

I am receiving a blocked notice for "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" about every 30 seconds or so. It gives me no options to allow it or not. I looked it up on the browser and still could not determine what it is and if it is important. The site gives me three steps to do and will not give information until I do all three steps. I do not want to open myself up to anything that could be destructive to my computer and I figure the ZoneAlarm is blocking it from accepting a connection from the Internet for a reason. Does anyone know what this is?

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)
    Software Version:

    Hi bluebarfpw,

PLEASE give GHPWin32 Services(svchost.exe) full access rights both in trusted and internet and server rights but only in trusted zone (three green ticks and a red cross under server internet). Svchost is also used by windows xp for addresses resolving DNS so you should NOT block it in outgoing!
Legitimate programs send and receive to and from the internet, otherwise your computer wouldn't work. That's the case of svchost.exe which is essential for your computer working. That's different regarding internet server rights where a program stands with an open port waiting for connections like someone at home waiting for a phone call. You don't give server rights to your antivirus updater but still it receives the updates of virus definitions.

Hope this info has helped you.

Thank you for your time and have a nice day!

Hey, slyfox, I now allow the GHP Win32 S and it still keeps popping up as a blocked program. When I checked the logs it is listed as an allowed program and I can't allow it again. Is there something else I need to do?

    Hi bluebarfpw,

Here are a couple of solutions to your current problem.

    1.)

Give Generic Host Process Server Rights in the Trusted Zone and full Access rights. And yes, a red cross for Internet in the Server section. Empty the Trash folder in Mozilla Firebird or empty the cache from your current browser. Then empty your recycle bin. Reboot and try it again.

    2.)

If you are using ZA Free, you'll have to reset your database. Sometimes ZA Pro features get activated causing this problem. Reset the database this way; you will lose your customizations and will need to reconfigure Zone Alarm.

    1. Boot your computer into the Safe Mode. {Instructions if needed}
    2. Navigate to the c:\windows\internet logs folder.
    3. Delete the backup.rdb and iamdb.rdb files in the folder.
    4.Reboot into the normal mode

Hope this info has helped you, if not PLEASE post back.

Slyfox, that seems to have done it! The blocked GHPW32S is not appearing any more. Thanks so much for your help. I am grateful that you are available to help and share your knowledge. Sincerely, Dainne

Hey slyfox! Things have been going fine with the Generic Host Process for Win32 Services and I thought it was doing it's thing ok, with no alerts happening any more. But, today it decided to start all over again and I noticed that the blocked message was occurring alot more frequently than before. It is listed as incomming"accept", but destination is marked "blocked". So what is going on now?? There is no way to click the button to allow it or to add it to any "accepted" site list. Thanks for your time. Looking forward to the next leg in the GHP Win32 S saga!! Sincerely, Dianne M. Parker

I have windows XP home edition.
