Default Internet Connection being choked to death

    Hello.
I am new here and I hope I'm putting this in the correct section.
My internet connection is being "clogged".I installed ZoneAlarm on a fresh install of WinXP and connected to the internet just fine.
I went to sleep and when I had woke the next morning the Zone Alarm security center told me that it had blocked 1200 intrusions while I was asleep.
It is now almost evening and I'm up to 5561 blocked intrusions.
Along with this, my internet connection has slowed down significantly.
Is there something I have not configured properly?
I've been going throught the help file and changing settings all day and it's very frustrating.
    Anyway, thanks for any help.

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Pro
    Software Version:6.5

Perhaps I shouldl rephrase my question.

Are all these internet "intrusions" slowing down my internet connection?
    Is this possible?
I am going to get a nice router and hopefully this will help.
I usually ping around 120 on gaming servers now I'm at 600 I just don't get it.Side question, if I get a nice router should I ever bother with ZA?
Someone told me that it would un unecessary.

Are they all from the same IP address (or several address's) or of a few different ports? Which ones are they ? A router won't get rid of the problem, it will just remove it from your notice. And they will not appreciably affect your connection until you are starting to get several hundred a minute. I have gotten as high as 75,000 a day with no ill effects.

I would think most people would want to use both a hardware firewall/router and a software firewall. They should not conflict with each other (as opposed to 2 software firewalls which is not recommended). With ZA and a router, you have some backup protection, and ZA allows for additional configuration and tweaking. ZA also has some functions besides just that of firewall, i.e., it has some antispy features, privacy features, and an operating system firewall. A router can help protect you from something getting IN to your computer (as can ZA), but ZA can also help protect you from something calling OUT from your computer. i.e., if something does get into your computer through email, browsing, unwanted download, etc., ZA might help block it from functioning, hijacking other programs, or calling out to the Internet. As a minimum, a router should have NAT and SPI firewalls.

Hey thanks for the replies guys.
I actually just reinstalled and didn't edit any settings and everything is now ok.
    ZoneAlarm rocks!

Well everything was ok and then the same song and dance started again.
Internet is slowing down and I can't figure out why.
The number of intrusions is not nearly as bad as before but still this is puzzling me.
Has anyone had a similiar situation?
I don't know how to gauge my internet speed except for game ping.
Usually I'm at a consistant (have been for months) 120-130.
Now it goes from 120-350 jumping all over the place.
This is consistant with all the games I play.
    Very frustrating.
    Anyway, thanks for any input.
