Default no internet connection even after manual uninstall

i believe it is a zonealarm problem, because i could connect to the internet when i am in the safe mode. and the same problem happened before the last time i upgraded (have connection in safe mode but no connection in normal mode) and i was able to fix that by deleting all the zonealarm files.

the problem started when my free version of zonealarm (v6.5 i believe) constantly popping up windows asking me to upgrade. i ignored it for a while but it was so persistent. so i did a upgrade and the nightmare began. the upgrade to v7 did not complete because it can't access some service or something. and it left me in an unstable state, so i did an uninstall and everything was fine. but this was only because i did not reboot. the next morning, i boot up my machine only to realize that my connection was gone.

having experienced the same problem before i did not panic. i started into safe mode, removed all the zonealarm files and registry entries according to this post:
    http://nh3.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/P...tallNonNT.html

    but it did not help.

i downloaded a full v7 zonealarm free install version, installed it under normal mode. the install can't finish.

i went into safe mode and installed it again. the install finished. i came back up normal mode. sure enough, zomealarm was working, it pops up windows asking for permission when i try to ping yahoo.com. but even if i say allow. i still can't connect.

i would appreciate it if zonealarm engineers could identify additional files that was not part of this instruction

i would think the list is old and won't apply to v6 or v7 products? i am thinking of installing a 6.5 version. not sure if it would help. and also where do people get old install images?

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)
    Software Version:6.5

First is is good that you have tried some manual removal.
But there is a complete list. that you may be unaware of. See SlyFox'x super list>

It is likely there is a vsdadant or vsmon in the system32 and subfolders or their keys are left in the registry under the Control Sets..

Second it is possible that the TCP/IP stack was damaged from the uninstall (not uncommon with install/uninstalls of firewall and related networking applications. So to do a quick fix, try a repair tool such as XP TCP Repair.
Download and run both parts of this tool and immediately reboot>

Thirdly but not the least, make sure the DNS and the DHCP servers are added to the Zones of the Firewall of the Zone Alarm firewall>

Make sure your DNS and DHCP server IP's are in your Firewall's Trusted zone. Finding DNS and DCHP servers, etc

    1. Go to Run type in command , hit 'ok', and type ipconfig /all then press enter. In the returned data list will be a line DNS and DHCP Servers with the IP address(s) listed out to the side.
    2. In ZA on your machine on the Firewall>Zones tab click Add and then select IP Address. Make sure the Zone is set to Trusted.
    3. Click OK and then Apply and see if that works to fix it.
    4. The loopback or localhost (127.0.0.1) must be listed as Trusted.
    5. The Generic Host Process (svchost.exe) must have server rights for the Trusted Zone.
Plus it must have both Trusted and Internet Access.
