Default Can only connect with Internet Security set to medium.

    On my son's computer,
cannot connect to the Internet unless he shuts down ZA or changes the Internet Security setting from High to Medium.
    Any ideas?

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Software Version:5.x
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

Are the DNS and the DHCP server IP's listed as Truested in the Zones?

Do this in your son's PC:

    1. Go to Run type in command , hit 'ok', and type ipconfig /all then press enter. In the returned data list will be a line DNS and DHCP Servers with the IP address(s) listed out to the side.
    2. In ZA on your machine on the Firewall>Zones tab click Add and then select IP Address. Make sure the Zone is set to Trusted.
    3. Click OK and then Apply and see if that works to fix it.
    4. The localhost (127.0.0.1) must be listed as Trusted.
    5. The Generic Host Process (svchost.exe) must have server rights for the Trusted Zone.
Plus it must have both Trusted and Internet Access.

Oldsod, thanks for the quick reply.
My son's computer connects to the internet
    wirelessly
    to a router.
He said the problem existed for a year.
Sometimes it works for a while and then he loses the ability to connect.
    So
he would shut down ZA, or change the internet security level
    from high to medium and
the internet connection would be fine.
    1.
    I tried to do
"command - ipconfig /all" as you suggested, but the computer would not allow that to happen.2.
Generic Host Process has server rights in the trusted zone and access in internet and trusted zone.3.
    I don't know what localhost (127.0.0.1) is.
No such thing listed in ZA Firewall or ZA Program Control.4.
I went into ZA Firewall and found that the IP address for the computer was in the internet zone, so I changed
it to trusted zone.Seems to be working fine, even after several hours.
Does that all make sense to you?
Have I compromised security? Thanks very much.

    OK

Open the Run (left click Start and open the Run) and type in command and OK. The command should appear.

Just manually add the localhost using the Add button asnd select IP and make sure it is Trusted, not internet.

The IP of the computer is not required to be listed in the ZA. Just the gateway and the DHCP and the DNS IP's.

BTW you have not compromised security. Keep in mid there is a router in front with it's hardware firewall- it blocks unwanted inbound very well.

    OK, thanks for your patience.
    I got to ipconfig /all.
Now, here is what I have in the ZA Firewall tab:
IP address for the Ethernet adapter subnet
in trusted zone.IP address for Default Gateway, DHCP Server, and DNS Servers in trusted zone.
Everything seems to be working OK.
    Are these
    settings the way to go?
Does anything go in the internet zone?

    Hi

    It all sounds good.

Nothing has to be added as internet because any other IP will be automatically handled as internet .It is just the important ones and the ones that are not internet that get the trusted label.

Things should be Ok from here on in.
