He has not hijacked my thread.
He has my permission to respond as he seems to have a much better grasp of the situation that anybody else that I have talked with or herad from on this thread.
If the fix that you suggested worked you would have just said so.
The problem is within Zone alarm.
I do not use opera or any of its components.
I have been told ultimately by your tec support that I must contiually uninstall the zone alarm software and reinstall it loosing all my settings.
That is time consuming and as it turns out a useless solution.
Do you have a solution to this problem or is it beyond the expertise of your programers to fix?ThanksPaul

    Hi!
first of all, ZA staff does not monitor this board. We are all users here helping each other (as much as we can).

If all the above has not resolved your issue than its simply your ZA database that is corrupted. Why does your ZA database get corrupted?

Usually ZA database become corrupted if:

    - Your PC hangs/crash
    - Cold shutdown (improper shutdown)
    - Malware infections
    - Conflicts with other tools (other security tools installed, registry monitoring, defrag, etc..)

    Hello,

    Thanks for the reply.
I believe you are correct when you say the ZA database is corrupted.
Your list of options is the likely culprits in most cases.
As far as the first 3 option are concerned, I do not have any of those issues.
As for the last - I do not have any other security tools. registry monitors and did not defragged just before or subsequent to using this software.
I have tried to use IE7 with the add-in (on) shut off and the problem persists.
When I shut down ZA I can open the pdf's just fine.
Therefore I must conclude that the problem is with ZA as the 1/2 dozen times that I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software, carefully following all of the directions, the problem resurfaces within a very short time.
I appreciate your help as I have found that the ZA phone tech support is a waste of time.
Their $5.00 solution each time is to uninstall and reinstall.
The board members I believe know more about the software then the designers know.
It is almost to the point that I must conclude that the software is not as advertised and ZA is just unwilling to address the issue by solution or at least by designing a fix to allow the rapid repopulation of the settings once the uninstall and reinstall effort is completed.
Thanks in advance for any further help that you can offer.

    Hi!
I am sorry you are having problems with ZA, I have to say that your issue in not really common.
In many years of use of ZA I had to reset ZA database probably once or twice. So, it can happen but not always as in your case.

    So, it is really weird.

Please also note that you do not necessarily need to call ZA phone support to get support from ZA.
If you have a valid license you can contact free of charge the ZA technical support at: www.zonelabs.com/tsform

You have initially stated you are using ZASS 6.5.
The first recommendation I would give is to upgrade to the latest version 7.0.462.000.
Upgrade its free for user running a valid license (not expired)
If you upgrade choose the clean install option.

Second, please double check that you are not infected by malware ZA 6.5 is weak in terms of detection.
You can scan your system on line, for example, with Kaspersky: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Third, are you using any tool to speedup the shutdown of XP?
For example, User Profile Hive Cleanup Service? Some users have reported that it can create problems to ZA.

Forth, to exclude any third party software conflict you will need to start your system only with ZA and standard MS programs and services.
    This way:

    1.) Click Start -> Run
2.) Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
3.) Once in MSConfig, click the Startup Tab
4.) Remove the checks from everything except ZLClient
    5.) Click the Services Tab
6.) Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
7.) Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet
    Monitor, and click OK.
    8.) Restart your computer

How does it work? Test again your ZA... boot your system more times.
Try to run it like this for a while... and see if you still experience the problem.

NOTE: You can place your computer back into a normal startup process by
going back into msconfig and choosing the Normal Startup option on the
    General tab.

Please post back with your results.

Hello Guru - masterful and wise,Thank you for all your suggestions.
    On the issue of upgrading.
I was hesitating as this issue has plaged me for some time and I did not want to add another layer of dirt until I had resolved it.
Now that it all seems to be working I will consider it.I had run and did rerun spyware and malware sweeps by both ZA and PC Rescue.
I also ran the Kaspersky scan without any threats detected.
I have no tools installed to speed up or shut down my system.
I did run the forth protocol that you indicated and it seems to have fixed the issue.
My system has now been reset to the Normal start up with a few additional eliments removed.
Mcafee files were in the start up msconfig.
Mskdetct, ccmnhdlr, mcvsshld were unchecked but are now checked again.
That software was unistalled and all files related were thought to be deleted previously to the ZA installation.
I will have to go back and see if I have remove all of that virus type software program.
It was an infection in itself.
It is all working now and I am very pleased.
You have done more to restore the credibility of ZA then any of the help I got from
    ZA
    directly.
    For that I thank you.Regards,Paul

Everything was just fine until the update and it seems to of haired up the ZLClient.
    I will try
    the fix yougave me
before and I promise to never update the MajorStupid software again.
God - I cannot amagine buying a Lincoln with that retarded Microsoft software in it.
