Default Starting a virus scan from safe mode in windows xp

I can not start windows normally and have to open it in safe mode. There is perhaps a remote possibility that it is a virus that is causing this which I may have allowed access.
I have tried to start zone alarm but it will not open in safe mode with networking or safe mode alone. Is there a way to start the program and do a scan in safe mode so I can eliminate a possible cause before I call microsoft to fix the problem?
I have tried going to the folder and trying some of the exe files but nothing opens the program.
    thanks

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Software Version:
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

    Most immediate solution is:

To use the System Configuration Utility method
    Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

    Safe Mode

Another (my favorite) is add the safe boot switch to the boot.ini for a permanent boot mode selection. (after the normal mode entry
.But leave this for later reading, not now.

There is no ZA icon in the tray in the safe boot, so either open the ZA from the All programs under the Start Menu or type into the New Task (button found in the Applications tab) of the Task Manager:

    C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe

    and OK.
The ZA should come up and begin.
    Then start your scans.
