Default zonealarm 7.1.254 stops me accessing the internet

i have windows vista ultimate and zonealarm security suite - if i install zonealarm it basically kills all access to the internet. anything on the lan continues to work and ive found that if i type in ip addresses for websites eg google i can access them.

so clearly zonealarm is blocking the dns. if i uninstall zonealarm everything works, if i install it the dns is blocked so its not invalid dns ips.

i have tried turning off everything in zonealarm and setting it to not start with windows (the truevector service is off when zonealarm is not started at windows startup) but this makes no difference. it seems as long as the zonealarm network driver is installed its blocking my dns.

i have also tried zonealarm 7.4 and it has the exact same effect.

both dns servers are added to the trusted zone already - i tried adding a rule to just add everything to the trusted zone and it made no difference either.

    what else can i try?

    Operating System:Windows Vista Ultimate
    Software Version:7.1 (Vista)
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

1). If the windows is set up for the windows itself to perform all domain name lookups (the DNS Client Service is enabled) for all supported programs and for windows components, the Generic Host Process (svchost.exe) must not only be allowed Trusted and Internet Access, but it must be allowed also the Trusted Server rights. (check mark for the trusted servere may be needed).
2). The DNS server IPs are included as Trusted in the Zones, but is your gateway/router acting as the DNS server? In any event, I assume the gateway/router is added already as Trusted in the Zones as it would be the default DHCP server. If the incorrect IPs for the DNS is suspect, then reset windows to use an alternative dns such as opendns.com (resolver1.opendns.com is 208.67.222.222 and resolver2.opendns.com is 208.67.220.220)
3). Are the DNS server IP's correct? These are often changed from time to time by the internet provider themselves. Are the correct DNS servers entered into the properties of the Internet Protocol (IPV4) found in the Properties of the Network Connection's Local Area Connection? (sorry for the inexact terms, but I do not use vista and refer only in XP terminology).
4). Is the IPv6 disabled in the properties of the Local Area Connection?
5). Perhaps the DNS cache of windows has become corrupted? Flush the current list of dns using the "ipconfig /flushdns" command.
6). Please make sure the windows firewall is off in the Control Panel and disabled in the Services.
7). If the Trusted Security Zone slider is set to High instead of Medium, then the usually needed connection incoming from the Trusted servers can be blocked off. This can affect the DNS connections. Make sure the Trusted Security Zone is at Medium, not the High setting.
8). Additional security software installed along side the ZAISS that perform site/cookie blocking, web scanning of the http traffic, network or worm protection, intrusion protection and email scanning can interfer with the firewall of the ZA. Please make sure the other security does not overlap the ZA firewall.
9). In the ZA|Firewall|Main|Advanced make sure the Trusted Servers are not blocked, in the settings.
10). Change the Program Control slider to Medium if it is now set at High. This may affect some previously inadvertantly blocked user-adjustment in one of the ZA's alerts and maybe rectify that mistakenly made decision.
11). I assume the loopback (127.0.0.1) is set already as Trusted in the Zones?
12). Right click the svchost.exe (Generic Host Process) in the ZA's Program listing and open the Options. Check the first two items and Apply and OK.
13). If there was a recent change of the windows files (winlogon, csrss, rundll32, svchost, explorer, services, userinit, etc) by an update or service pack, then these files no longer have the same hash sums as previously seen by the ZA. In this case, the ZA will ignore the new modified file and still only operate with the old and incorrect has sums of the previous file before the update/upgrade.The ZA will ignore the new or changed files as this no longer resemble the old/previous files. This will also apply to any program listed in the ZA listing that has experienced and upgrade or update - including any updaters, browsers, email clients, clients, etc.
If this is the case, then delete the item(s) from the ZA listing, close the ZA and then re-open the ZA, then open the program for the ZA to be able to recognize the "new" program by it's "new" hashsums.
14). If the ZA database has become corrupted (this does seem to me to be the answer), then resetting the ZA database will solve the problem. Corrupts in the ZA databse occur if windows experienced a "hard" or difficult shutdown, or if there was an issue with the hard memory (some application or windows itself experienced a buffer overflow or memory issue) and the ZA itslef running in the memory was damaged and this carried onto the ZA data, or if windows experienced a "mini crash" and even though windows recovered, it corrupted all known .xml files - including the ZA's own .xml files.

To reset the ZA database and start the ZA once again as when it was first installed without uninstalling the ZA[*] Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together[*] Right click on the ZA icon near your clock[*] Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up[*] Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box[*] When prompted, choose OK to restart your system [*] Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

After the reboot, set the New network as Trusted and re-enter the dns server in the Zones of the Firewall. Then make sure the Loopback (127.0.0.1) is added as Trusted into the Zones and the Generic Host Process (svchost.exe) has both Trusted and Internet Access and Trusted Server rights.

If a backup of the ZA's setting was saved, then do not use the backup to restore the ZA settings!
The backup itself may be corrupted and the original problem will be re-introduced into the ZA.
Ony use the backup if it absolutely certain it is does not have any of the corruption.

Once the ZA has settled in and the settings/configurations are nicely finished, then create a backup. The backup can be then restored and used if the problem returns again or the backup can be restored for any other various reason(s).

    thanks for the reply

1 - i let zonealarm detect all programs and left it on autolearn - it had set svchost.exe as you described
2/3 - the dns servers are both trusted and router ip is in the local network trusted access. one of the dns servers is opendns - both dns servers are fixed so they dont change
4 - ipv6 is on but dont think its used
5 - havent tried that but the moment i uninstall zonealarm everything works so not sure that dns is corrupted - zonealarm seems to be blocking or intefering with dns
6 - windows firewall is disabled
7 - trusted zone is at medium but dropping trusted and internet zones to off makes no difference to this dns issue either
8 - no additional security software other than windows firewall and defender (both standard on vista and both disabled)
    9 - nothing is blocked
10 -tried dropping security levels and makes no difference
11 - loopback is in trusted
12 - will take a look at this but surely svchost settings should be correct - also turning program control completely off has no effect
13 - no files have changed since install - windows update is off
14 - will try this but ive tried installing 3 times now and each time it blocks the dns

Even though the main opendns server is 208.67.222.222 you should use both (include the 208.67.220.220) along with the other dns server (I presume this is the internet provider's dns server).

Any chance there was a previous firewall or security suite installed on the vista before the ZA was installed? Perhaps there are remainig file/drivers and registry keys from the previous firewall now interferring with the ZA? Was there a previous security suite or software firewall installed on the operating system?

The TCP/IP stack of windows may have become corrupted from a previous security software installation. Reset the TCP/IP with the "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" command (I think this works for Vista, as this is for XP).
The log of the reset action should be found in the Documents and Settings.

Also (getting out of my league, as I am XP knowledgeable, not a Vista user), the LSP maybe either corrupted with a .dll remnant from a previous security application OR from a troyan/malware injected into the LSP (layered service provider) OR from an application presently installed (media network sharing or other applications, perhaps some other security software). Either inspect files used in the LSP found within the System Information or with third party software (LSP Fix was for XP, but unsure if this works/is useable for Vista).

The LMHost should be disabled in the Properties of the network connections and give the windows's host file a once over to make sure the needed servers are not blocked.
Since IPv6 is not used, I would suggest to disable and leavce it until needed.
Turn off the Windows Defender and make sure it is disabled from starting with windows boot and then reboot - perhaps the Defender is involved and no harm in trying.

Try "netstat -anob" in the command and copy/paste into your next reply.
Lets see what is happening locally.

Try " netsat -b 5 > activity.txt" when opening the browser to an internet web site.
Wait for at least ten minutes, then press Ctrl+C
The logging txt will be found in the Documents and Settings or on the root of the c drive.
Please copy/paste into your next reply.

Ping google in the command - use "ping google.com" in the command.

Traceroute google in the command - use "tracert google.com" in the command.

DNS google in the command - use- "nslookup google.com" in the command.
The tracert results should be the most informative - please post the results in your reply. This will basically show the connectivity of your outgoing connections and how far it did travel.

Also just out of curiousity, ping the localhost (127.0.0.1) and also the router IP and post the results. Please ping the opendns dns servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220).
Please post all of these results in your next post.
(copy and paste the command results using the options found in the Edit menu of the command icon in the upper left corner of the command).

didnt seem to write a log file but reset all my fixed ip addresses etc but didt make a difference either

5 - tried resetting the zonealarm settings but that seems to be the same as just reinstalling which ive also tried (after removing internet logs folder etc)

6 - how would i look at the LSP (layered service provider)?

    thanks for the help

Are you on VISTA SP1? If not try to update to it (without ZA).
Are you running an NVIDIA harware... I have seen similar issue due to hardware firewall or drivers controlling the network card.
