Default Another problem with MSFT update - XP(KB951748)

    Just to let you know,

My PC - Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 Personal home computer - Cable modem access.
all current updates thru 7-8-2008, except .
Installed current MSFT updates today including # XP(KB951748) Security Update. Restart of PC required.

    I use Zone Alarm Anti-Spyware/Firewall.

If the Zone Alarm Firewall Zone Setting is set to HIGH (Stealth highest protection) and the KB951748 security update is installed, access is now denied to the Internet and E-mail.

If the Firewall Zone setting is set to Medium (ZA recommends that this medium setting is only used as a temporary setting thus not the highest protection), then access to the internet and e-mail is allowed.

I removed the MSFT update (via Add-Remove programs), restarted the computer, tested the ZA Firewall HIGH setting and access to the internet/e-mail was allowed.

Prior to any of today s updates to my computer, everything worked perfect.

I appreciate your time to review this situation and look forward to your reply.

I also contacted MSFT Help-Tech support with the same information.

    Thank You, Larry

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware

I had the same precise problem with WinXP SP-2 Professional. I've logged a support ticket with ZA. I'll leave the firewall set to "Medium" for the time being. Thanks very much for ID'ing the problem update.

    This is Lora:
    I just finished uninstalling KB951748!
    Same problem.
I am using Windows XP Home Ed SP2 with ZA Pro Firewall and Avira Anti Virus.
This is the 2nd Window's update I have had to uninstall and mark "don't offer it to me again".
I'm doing just fine without them.

I was going nuts. I tried system restore and got it working only to find new update installed right after that and all internet access gone. I found too if you lower firewall settings to medium all is good. I do not feel confortable leaving it there. At least I'm not along and hopefully ZA will find a cure!

While I regret that so many others are having the same problem I've encountered today, it is at least comforting to know that my problem is not unique! As others report, installing todays Microsoft update caused my Zone Alarm firewall to stop all traffic until I reduced the firewall setting from "High" to "Medium." Surely there will be a better resolution shortly. I can't avoid wondering if this is doesn't reflect Microsoft's attempt to force users to scrap Zone Alarm in favor of the Windows firewall.

Create an expert rule allowing access from My Computer to any destination, any protocol, any time, and you can leave your Internet Zone security on High.

Same here. XP SP3 and etc. MS updates cripples ZA.
