Default unable to uninstall KB951748

i do have 'show updates' ticked, but none of my prior hotfixes show up in add/remove programs. i know i've seen them there before.

That's weird - ticking that box should show them all.

I take it you scrolled all the way down through Add/Remove programmes?

yep, thanks for the reply, tsec. i see the hotfixes, security updates, etc, for outlook, but nothing for windows. and i'm positive i've seen them before. i'm not sure i've seen them since sp3 however. but i've seen other users here that are using sp3, so that can't be it.

in the interim, i have set my internet zone security to medium, so i'm able to surf. (8

All of the patches in add/Remove programs should have a description then their KB number in brackets afterwards.

Eg. Security Update for Windows XP (KB123456)
Hotfix for Windows Media Player 11 (KB789012)

Etc.

Strange that you dont see the Security Update with (KB951748) after the end of the decription.

Nonetheless, having the Internet Zone slider on medium should be OK - just be careful where you surf

I also had no updates showing in my add/remove programs list, but after checking the "show updates" box at top of the window they appeared. I found what i needed to delete under "Windows XP - Software updates" 7th and most recent entry in the list - "Update for windows XP (KB951748)"

worked for me

Did you perform a System Restore? Late last night
before I knew what was going on, I did a System
Restore and that seemed to remove KB951748 from
the list in Add/Remove programs. However, the
Update must not have been removed as ZoneAlarm
was still blocking access. I disabled ZoneAlarm
and enabled Windows Firewall so I could check the
list of applied patches on "windowsupdate.microsoft.com"
and KB951748 was listed there. Might be nice if
Microsoft had a "Remove" option from the Windows
Updates Web page.

At any rate, to remove KB951748, I saw a post on
another forum that suggested the following:

1) Check the contents of C:\Windows for a folder
named "$NtUninstallKB951748$" (may be a hidden
folder)

2) Within that folder, there should be a subfolder
named "spuninst".

3) Within the "spuninst" folder, I simply ran the
program named "spuninst.ext".

Seemed to work for me.

Uninstalling the patch in question via add/remove programs is more preferable than poking around in hidden system files.

I dare say that there would be many out there not confident of poking around in the bowels of the windows directory

I agree. Only problem was KB951748 was not included in my
list of "Add/Remove Program" ('show updates' was checked).
Again, I think doing the System Restore messed up the
list of updates included in "Add/Remove Programs".

Just wanted to provide another option in case others
may have encountered the same problem. Knowing what
I know now, I wouldn't have even done the System
Restore, but stumbled upon this mess before it was
a widely-known issue.

nope. haven't done a system restore because i have system restore on all drives turned off. creates overhead on a slow machine, and i never use them anyway.

there are a number of hotfixes i've installed in the past, however, no $NtUninstallKB951748$.

but thanks very much for the suggestion.
