Default Internet stops (all browsers, just http not https) - RESOLVED, problem with trusted zone security settings

Hello, good morning. I am now running vista on both my computer (64-bit wired connection in hall of residence) and my laptop (32-bit wireless connection in hall of residence and elsewhere) and I am having strange connection issues and google turns up nothing so you are my last hope!

The strange thing is that my browsing stops and I can't log-on to anything, but any downloads or other programs (such as skype etc.) remain connected and functional.

Rebooting the computer completely solves the problem! although Log-off/on doesn't solve it. Rebooting constantly throughout the day (about 3 times) is such an annoyance especially when you are in the middle of something.

I am running three different browsers (chrome, FF and IE) and all three stop working at the same time.

Google chrome gives me this error:
    Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): Unknown error.

    Firefox gives me this error:
Failed to connect. The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.google.com.

    IE gives me this error:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

    Internet connectivity has been lost.
    The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
There might be a typing error in the address.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

Windows (right clicking network icon and selecting diagnose and repair) gives me this:

"www.microsoft.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web service (HTTP)" with this computer. [then: windows found a problem that cannor be repaired automatically is given as a solution]

Windows (selecting my network adapter properties > diagnose) gives me this error:
Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection. If you still think there is a problem, you can do one of the following: Send a report to Microsoft. Reset the network adapter "Local Area Connection". Neither of which help! (Because I can't send the report and resetting doesn't help, only computer restart.)

I am virus/spyware free and now running SP2 on both machines.

Nothing appears to trigger the internet to stop working, but it seems to be about an hour to two hours after I have connected, although I have had it as little as 10 minutes after a boot. And rebooting solves the problem, until the next time!

I realise that this sounds like a DNS issue (looking up new addresses). But I have tried specifying the DNS server in my connection settings, and cmd > "ipconfig /release *" then "ipconfig /renew *" which doesn't do anything. /flushdns doesn't have any effect.

The interesting thing is that after the net has stopped working, and then after /release /flushdns /renew I can log into xfire chat, but not msn messenger.
    I can also ping 85.234.148.80 and google.com.

I can also access https:// websites for example google mail, paypal, but I can't access non-secure content (for example the adverts displayed on some https sites).

Thank you very, very much in advance. Philip Bembridge.

    Operating System:
    Windows Vista 64 bit
    Software Version:
    8.0
    Product Name:
    ZoneAlarm Pro

(by the way, when I say downloads continue, I mean non http downloads, for example downloads in steam not in browser)

Maybe a corrupt TCP/IP Internet Protocol stack. You could research at MS site.Just a suggestion.

I have no other suggestion other than this to resolve your issue.

Just curious ... Did you finally get your browser hangup issue resolved w/ZA?
    I had the exact
same problem but for me it was my AVG AntiVirus LinkScanner feature that apparently was the culprit. Once I disabled LS, everything worked fine ... for me at least. heh heh

Default Re: Internet stops (all browsers, just http not https) ****** RESOLUTION STEPS ******

Ah Yes, sorry I meant to reply!

Steps I took to resolve the issue:
    > Click the Firewall tab
    > Select Trusted zone security to medium
    > Select advanced (in the bottom right corner)
    > select reset to default and click ok
then back on the main screen:
    > select custom (next to 'trusted zone security')
    > and select 'Reset to Default'

    Completely solved!

So for anyone reading, try that, and if that fails, take a look at this thread!

    Thanks all! Much Love
