    Default Installation Dies at vsruledb.dll

I have installed ZA on many PC's and never had a problem ..... until now.
    I uninstalled Norton Internet Suite.
I downloaded latest version of freee ZA.
On installation the progress bar gets to 15%, vsruledb.dll and just hangs up.
    There are no messages.
This prevents me from accessing the internet.
It got to a point where I could uninstall using the Add/Remove Programs.
    I tried to reinstall again.
    Died in same place.
But this time nothing showed up on the Add/Remove
    list.
I had to boot into safe mode and delete all ZA folders in Program Files and System 32.
I tried this a couple of times with same results.
Eventually, I tried to install an old version that I had on my other pc.
    Version zlsSetup_65_731_000_en
I tried to install this one.
It got to the vsruledb.dll and paused a bit, then it took off.
Ran all the way till the MS error window.
Does anybody know what the heck is going on???
I presume there is a conflict with some other software but darned if I know what it coud be.
I'm relying on MS firewall and I'm none to confident on that.
I'd appreciate any help that comes my way.
    Thanks in advance.

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition

    Slyfox.

I just learned not to go to the Edit as HTML and then hit the Back button.

    I followed your instructions exactly.

I tried installing ZA and got past the vsruledb.dll point.
But, it died at around the 38% mark with the hard error (report to Microsoft).
After I responded it appeared to continue with the installation.
At 42% the installation went away.

    I uninstalled ZA (using Add/Remove).

I have been having problems with my IE 7.
Whenever I opened a download, upon closing the download IE errored out.
Thinking this might have something to do with my ZA install, I reinstalled IE 7.

After doing that I tried the ZA install but ended up with the same error.

So, I guess I'll see if there is a fix for this error.
It sure would be nice if MS let you know what the problem was.

If I can't find anything I guess I'll just have to find a different firewall.
    Much to my disappointment.
I have ZA on my other 3 PC's and it works great.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi Elmerrn

I am sorry that you are still having issues with ZA.

PLEASE DISCONNECT from the Internet when uninstalling ZA and PLEASE make sure NO OTHER programs are running. Also, PLEASE make sure you download a fresh copy of ZA to your desktop, prior to disconnecting from the Internet, so when you are completely finished uninstalling ZA, then you will be able to install the brand new fresh copy of it and be ready to go on the Internet again with protection. If you have any questions before you get started, PLEASE let me know, THANKS.

PLEASE go to the following thread and PLEASE follow the Exact Instructions, Thanks.

PLEASE keep me posted on your results, Thanks.

    Slyfox,
Thank you for all your help.
    But, no luck.
    Still dies.
I tried installing this product 5 times in various configurations (connected/disconnected/virus up/down/firewall up/down, etc.).
On a lark, one time I tried letting it go without responding to the unexpected error message.

It seemed to continue to install.
It go to the part where it started copying files then it went away.
I made sure that I was disconnected on the uninstall.
I downloaded the setup executable which I had not done before.
I turned off the MS Firewall.
    I stopped my antivirus program.
    I stopped my Bigfix app.
I performed the windows search and deleted all programs.
    I emptied the recycle bin.
I went through the registry manually and deleted anything "zone labs" or zonealarm.
    Even recent entries.
I've gotten some DEP messages lately so I thought maybe I could turn that off and try but you can't turn it off.
Currently it is set to only monitor Windows programs.
Apparently this application and my pc aren't going to work and play well together.
    Thanks again for your help.

Hi elmerrn,The only two things that keeping popping up with me that is causing these issues, is the fact that their are OLD Registry Files from Norton still installed on your computer. PLEASE check out your computer completely for any Norton's file, registry key, etc and remove it. The other thing is that when you were uninstalling Zone Alarm and then reinstalling it again, there were some registry keys that were missed. I will continue to search for you to find a solution, perhaps one of the other Guru's or Senior Contributors may have a solution that will work. But in the mean time PLEASE make sure there is NO Norton's stuff left on your computer, THANKS.SlyFox

    Slyfox,
You were correct about the Norton entries in the registry.
    I found quite a few.
    My mistake.
I thought I had removed them all.
I searched for "NORTON" and "SYMANTEC" in the registry.
Are there any other keywords I should search for?
I copied keys for all of them I deleted.
I can email a notepad document if you would like to see them.
    But, still same problem.
I get the unexpected error and the install continues till 60%, then it starts copying files and goes away even if I don't respond to the unexpected error message.
I don't know if the shared DLL's could be causing the problem or not.
I did not delete any of the DLL's identified as shared because I do not know enough to distinguish between Norton dll's and other application dll's that Norton uses.
It my experience that with problems that are such a pain, the solution will end up being very, very simple.
Like a misspelled name or something equally as obnoxiously simple.
But once again, thanks for your assistance.

Just run the Norton Removal Tool and it will remove many of the Norton files, drivers and registry keys for you.

Then run CCleaner to clean up some of the files and registry keys that it misses.

Yes, running the Norton Removal Tools was suggested on the 1st response.
I did download and run it.
I don't know if the tool missed these items or there is something left over that put's them back out there.
I'll have to check for those objects again.
I'll try that CCCleaner tool and give it a go one ....................... more .......................... time.
    Thanks for the response.
