Default installation problems: "vsmon: ordinal 55 not found in vsdata.dll"

Hi all,
I downloaded the trial version of the internet security suite. During installation, I received errors "vsmon: ordinal 55 not found in vsdata.dll" and then errors that the TrueVector service had to be stopped. The installation did proceed, but I have now various problems with my system. What can I do?
I have seen a pretty identical message in the Google cache of this forum. Unfortunately, the cache didn't store the answer. ZoneAlarm hasn't answered yet in 11 days.
Thanks
Kris

Hi

thanks for the suggestion. I was already afraid this would come. However, I cannot see how a complete reinstall would help, as I started from a zonealarm-free installation in the first place. I had Norton NIS before, but wiped that completely before installing ZoneAlarm (download the tool from Symantec, uninstall via control panel, reboot, run the tool, reboot, manual check).

Anyway, if I try this, I'll post the result.

thanks!

Hi
I've tried this with apparent success but did have some troubles along the way.
Reading the uninstallation instructions, I did uninstall my Cisco VPN software first. I guess this software might have caused my original problem (the ZoneAlarm installation procedure does mention that it has to stop the VPN service, and that it will restart it at the end., but maybe that just isn't enough).
The ZoneAlarm uninstallation failed (it hung on copying regcat), so I had to resort to deleting all files by hand (at least the services etc were apparently already removed) and running ccleaner.
I then reinstalled ZoneAlarm, which went much better than before, only
2
installation errors complaining about "regcat". The installation did proceed anyway (strange...).
So, I might have a protected system now, but I'm not sure. Sadly enough, my trial period is now down to 1 day (I guess I didn't completely wipe it after all).
I'd appreciate any advice on the "regcat" issue. Suggestions from Checkpoint on the trial period would also be welcome.
Many thanks for the help!
Kris

Hi!did you had any other security tool or 'guard' runnning while installing ZA? (e.g. spybotS&D, Adaware, SS, spyware doctor?)"Regcat" updates registry and install main AV kernel drivers. An error at that stage is not promising, it means the installer encounter problems writing in your registry or copying files into system directories.Do you have full user rights to install?I have the feeling the OS is causing problems and lock ZA installation... not a good signHope it helps.Cheers,Fax

Hi
no, I had only Norton NIS and removed that completely before doing anything with ZA. Nothing else. Also, I did the installation as a user with administrator rights.
As you expected, I seem to be having problems now. For instance, after the screensaver period comes and I want to work again, it takes 2-3 minutes before I get the login screen, and then another 2-3 before I can actually type my password.
So, this means another uninstall. Maybe the procedure that you suggested last time will work. I'll let you know.
Thanks!

Hi!Try to clean your system as much as possible... run the NIS uninstaller (if you didn't). As mentioned regcat no able to copy files or modifying the registry is not a good sign. Also shutdown any software you have running... before install ZACheers,Fax

Hi
the ZA uninstall procedure did work without problems this time. If I can winge a bit, I find the fact that we have to go through all this manual checking of remaining files ridiculous. In my case, after the uninstall, no ZA files remained, but there were some remaining MUI registry keys
found by ccleaner. Sloppy programming.
Then the install also worked without problems. Victory?
yes, it all works and I have 13 days of evaluation time.
but no! It all works so terribly slowly! Shutdown usually hangs (after a few hours I give up). Switching user (Fast User switching is on) takes about 8 mins. If I don't do anything at all, my system is using about 20% CPU time (sometimes a lot more), turning it into a noisy monster. And an antivirus scan takes a whole day.
So no, I don't think ZA is for me.

Thanks for all the help though.

hi

I use the version that's supplied by default by the installer, which is what you get when I downloaded this 2 weeks ago (+updated) (sorry, I have removed it now so can't check the version number). I wouldn't know how to get an earlier version. In any case, my confidence in ZA is on a low point now. If Checkpoint supplies a buggy version for installation, I'm pretty sure the same would happen when you update your version using the online update.

As this particular version makes my system unusable, I've removed ZA completely and am trying some other suite. If nothing better exists, I'll do another ZA trial.

thanks for the help!

Kris
