I was trying to install an older version of ZoneAlarm (126.96.36.1990) on an XP. The reason for using the older version is that I hear the newer ones are bloated, slow, and not recommended by many ZoneAlarm users. The version 188.8.131.520 is supposed to be one of the best versions and perfectly safe to use.
Everything was going good until about 20 seconds after I clicked the Install button. I saw a box that indicated it was unpackaging and installing the files. Then the computer rebooted into the Safe Mode selection screen. I selected to start Windows normally and it once again rebooted to the selection screen. I tried selecting Safe Mode but it wouldn't fully load. The desktop was black with the Safe Mode text in all corners, but nothing else would come up.
I then rebooted into Last known good configuration. Once everything came up, the ZoneAlarm setup box came up. I exited it and removed ZoneAlarm, then rebooted. Once everything was loaded I noticed that AVG Resident Shield was disabled. It said it was damaged and needed to be reinstalled. I reinstalled/repaired it and everything seems to be fine now.
Any idea as to why ZoneAlarm caused all this havoc? I'm kind of worried about trying to install it again or installing another firewall. BTW, it's not my computer, it's my grandmother's.
