Default ZoneAlarm severely crashed computer during Install

I was trying to install an older version of ZoneAlarm (4.5.5.940) on an XP. The reason for using the older version is that I hear the newer ones are bloated, slow, and not recommended by many ZoneAlarm users. The version 4.5.5.940 is supposed to be one of the best versions and perfectly safe to use.

Everything was going good until about 20 seconds after I clicked the Install button. I saw a box that indicated it was unpackaging and installing the files. Then the computer rebooted into the Safe Mode selection screen. I selected to start Windows normally and it once again rebooted to the selection screen. I tried selecting Safe Mode but it wouldn't fully load. The desktop was black with the Safe Mode text in all corners, but nothing else would come up.

I then rebooted into Last known good configuration. Once everything came up, the ZoneAlarm setup box came up. I exited it and removed ZoneAlarm, then rebooted. Once everything was loaded I noticed that AVG Resident Shield was disabled. It said it was damaged and needed to be reinstalled. I reinstalled/repaired it and everything seems to be fine now.

Any idea as to why ZoneAlarm caused all this havoc? I'm kind of worried about trying to install it again or installing another firewall. BTW, it's not my computer, it's my grandmother's.

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Software Version:4.x
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

Here see the official 'release history' of ZA Free - http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...seHistory.html
<hr>My suggetion is to download ZA Free 6.5.737
    - which is &quot;actually&quot; the most up-to-date and somewhat stable version before the 'bloated 7x Free series - only.' It was the '7x Free -only' series that has some serious bloat/conflict issues that many users have had. There are many users on 6.5.737.<hr>Tips:- don't use web accelerator nor download manager- better to use Internet Explorer 6/ 7, instead of firefox for ZA install- in your web browser - if it has pop-up blocker settings - adjust -
add &quot;download.zonealarm.com&quot; to safesite/whitelist - in any pop-blockers you have- with Webroot SpySweeper, SpywareDoctor, CounterSpy - temporarily shut off the shields, guards, watches, proactive protection { if you AVG full anti-spyware or anti-virus - you will need to temporarily shut the &quot;Resident Shield&quot; and any other real-time modules it may have}- don't multi-task while downloading/ installing ZA- questions: what was the previous firewall on this pc? post back - see - http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...message.id=154
Only one running firewall; previous firewall must be properly un-installled.- http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...message.id=145- what anti-virus are you running? post back.<hr>NaiveMelody NYC 11-15-07 - Stone Soul Picnic - The 5th Dimension

I got that version of ZoneAlarm from ZoneLabs three years ago - It's legitimate.

Norton Internet Security had been previously installed on the computer. My grandmother removed it but I forgot to double check that it was completely removed. She's now using the current version of AVG free antivirus (7.5) and Windows Firewall (I turned it off prior to installing ZA).

I don't know that I want to try installing ZA version 6.5.737 (or any other version). I'd hate to screw up her computer. For a few minutes there, I was worried that it wouldn't boot into anything other than the Safe Mode selection screen. I would've been in super hot water if I hadn't of been able to fix that mess. I have never had problems installing software before.

Question - what prompted this recent attempt at installing this old version? I am assuming she had this version already on her pc - working? If she hasn't changed or added
any software/ hardware the old ZA firewall should still be working? More info?

She never had ZA on her computer before. She had Norton Internet Security. She didn't like that so she uninstalled it. She then installed AVG antivirus free edition. Then she said she needed a firewall. After spending hours researching free or low costs firewalls, we decided on ZA version 4.5.594. It's older but ZA fanatics, geeks, and security specialists say it's the best version of ZA and one of the best free firewalls. They say it's safe to use because there have been no major security fixes in the current versions. Just because software is old doesn't mean it's not safe.

I had that version's installation file on my computer. I hang on to old software.

All I want to know is why it crashed the computer. If there's a chance a newer version (not 7.*) is going to crash her computer again, then I want to find something other than ZA. If you can't help me then please say so.

Pretty good odds that your grandma simply used the add/remove for removing Norton; the use of the Norton Removal Tool does clean up most of the remnants of Norton that can cause problems with new ZA installs. Read thru - http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...message.id=154
    - high recommendation
    to use the Tool
.<hr>Tips:- don't use web accelerator nor download manager- better to use Internet Explorer 6/ 7, instead of firefox for ZA install- in your web browser - if it has pop-up blocker settings - adjust -
add &quot;download.zonealarm.com&quot; to safesite/whitelist - in any pop-blockers you have- with Webroot SpySweeper, SpywareDoctor, CounterSpy - temporarily shut off the shields, guards, watches, proactive protection- if the AVG Free anti-virus is relatively new - less than 30 days it will come with an 'active &quot;Resident Shield&quot; and other real-time modules that do need to be 'temporarily' shut-off prior to installing ZA.- if after you do use the Norton Tool, and attempt to install ZA - it is somewhat common for the new ZA install to need a couple of restarts/ reboots for some, and it does normally take longer to start- than other firewalls - since other firewalls do not give as much program control and user
access to whats really running in their pc's.- look thru the 'release history' see the evolution of improvements thru the upgrades - http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...seHistory.html
