Default Can I transfer ZA settings between versions when upgrading?

It's time to renew my subscription.
Currently I am running ZAISS ver. 6.5.737 on Win XP/Pro w/ SP2, without any problems.
With the renewal, I will probably have to upgrade to version 7.0.
What I would like to do is transfer all my settings ( privacy, program control, mail, etc) to the new version.
I am aware of the removal process outlined in the forum.
Also thanks for the heads up on the norton removal tool.
    My questions are:
    1: Is this possible?
    2:
    Are the settings
stored in the " .zap " files located in the main ZA directory?

If not where are they located?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi!
yes, in principle you can use your settings with version 7 unless they are somehow corrupted.

For an easy and safe upgrade you should do the following:

    1. Download the new version of ZASS, here:
    http://www.ZoneAlarm.com/zasuitedownload/
    2. Backup your setting in ZA 6.5 (ZA Overview tab --> Preferences tab)
    3. On you current ZA 6.5 go to Overview --> Preferences tab --> UNcheck "Load ZA... at startup"
    4. Reboot
    5. Install the new version you have downloaded before and when asked select "UPGRADE".
    6. Once finished you will be asked to reboot
    7. Once rebooted go to ZA antivirus/antispyware tab and push on "update now"

and you are ready to go... and your 6.5 settings should have been kept.

Please note that ZASS 7 comes with a new antivirus engine. ZASS 7 is much more sensible to other security tools installed on your system. For example, spyspweeper, spywaredoctor, other antivirus, etc... before installing the new version, and to avoid any sort of problems, remove these tools and install only after you see everything works as it should.

If you see your ZA 7 is not working correctly, clean Uninstall (http://www2.nohold.net/noHoldCust542...an_intall.html), install the new version and restore your 6.5 backup (it may take a long time to import your settings). If you still see that your ZA 7 is not working as it should it means that your previous settings were somehow corrupted. In this case, just clean Unistall and re-install without importing the new settings.

    Hope this helps.

    Fax,
    Thanks for the quick response.
Sorry I am so slow to acknowledge your response.

    ZAs" online pricing structure is
a little stiff for a backup disk.
    Their retail packaging is better.
So I plan to wipe ZA 6.5 as per the forum outline after saving my settings
I will be disabling my spyware,
registry cleaner programs and any other miscellaneous programs loaded at startup.
I will also have to use the norton tool as there are some remnants remaining.
(luckily this never interfered with ZA).
Considering I am not using the upgrade, but the retail version of ZA 7, will I still be able to pull in the backed-up settings with the upgrade now switch?

Or would I have to replace the settings manually?
    My main question:
    Is it
the ".ZAP" files where the settings
    are stored?
I will be making a separate copy of those files to an alternate location.
    Thanks again,

    Hi!
not sure I can follow what you are trying to say.

There is no need to wipe out version 6.5 and you can backup your settings in ZA 6.5 (under overview --> preferences tab).
The backup file can be used afterwards with the ZA 7 version (overview --> preferences --> restore)

In other words: you don't need to copy manually the configurations files, you have a backup feature you need to use.

Are you using ZA Suite 6.5 as indicated in your signature or the ZA 6 free?
If you are using ZA free, it is not possible to backup the configuration files.

    Fax,
    Thanks for the response.
I am using the suite not the free version.
What I was trying to explain was doing a clean removal of version 6.5 after backing up my settings.
Then installing a clean version 7.0 suite.
From there I would go into overview and use the restore function to bring back my original settings.
I felt this would be the least stressful way to make the transition, especially after reading about others having problems overwriting the old version during the upgrade.
Happy to report I did the upgrade earlier this evening.
I am now running ZAISS version 7.0.
Everything appears to be functioning well.
I did have a nervous moment ( 30 of them to be exact).
After hitting the restore settings, I watched the progress window.
It stated it would take a few minutes depending how complex the backup was.
It took a total of 45 minutes to complete the restore function and return the " restore completed successfully" message.

I want to thank you again for your assistance.

    Best regards,

    You're welcome!
Don't always use what is posted here as reference. They are usually extreme cases....
What suggest to you (not removing 6.5) was the fastest (restoring after clean install takes a long time) way to get everything running well.

But glad to hear everything is working as it should.
