Default Something hijacked my IE-6 nd Zone Alarm won't cure it

I let my wife use my laptop the other evening and as she was browsing a gardening site she clicked on an item of interest and the computer started to log onto sites that were not the sites clicked on or if entered as a URL started to redirect to other sites including one that has a virus scanner and it says my computer is infected with several viruses.
I shut everything down and ran the virus and spyware scans and everything seemed ok.
I tried to log on to and got several 404 errors.
I tried to log onto several other sites and got redirected to strange sites I did not enter into the address bar.
I finally downloaded Zone Alarm on a portable disk drive on another computer and re-installed it on my laptop.
I was able to log onto some sites now by denying resource access to some software.
I went to Microsoft and ran their online malware scanner and my laptop came up clean but it still will not log onto some sites I tried including
    Can anyone help?
