Default Cannot turn Windows Firewall on or off using Control Panel

I recently did a clean install of WinXP Pro SP2. I did not turn off Windows Firewall before installing ZoneAlarm Pro. When I go to Firewall from Control Panel, the ON and OFF buttons are disabled (they are gray) and I cannot change them. The Security Center indicates at least one firewall is running. ZoneAlarm is set to disable Windows Firewall.

I backed up the partition and tried a test re-installing WinXP. I turned off Windows Firewall before installing ZoneAlarm Pro. Now the ON and OFF buttons are not gray and I can turn Windows Firewall on and off as I please. When I click OFF, Security Center says only ZoneAlarm is running. When I click ON, Security Center says at least one fire wall is running. As before, ZoneAlarm is set to disable Windows Firewall.

I restored the partition and am back to where I was, unable to turn Windows Firewall on or off using the Control Panel. I have a lot of time invested in configuring the first installation and do not want to start over. Is there something I can do to enable the ON and OFF buttons of the Windows Firewall cpl? I can turn Windows Firewall ON and OFF by editing the registry (HKLM\Software\Polices\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\S tandardProfile\EnableFirewall) but I would like to avoid that.

Operating System:Windows XP Pro
Software Version:7.0
Product Name:ZoneAlarm Pro

Please Right Click on the "Z"Icon on the Bottom right System Tray and Click "Shutdown Zone Alarm" http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o..._1readthis.gif

Here is another Tip..

Please Right Click on the ZA Tray icon on the Lower Right and Click the "About" Option this will pop up a windows with all the Info about your Version Of ZA including the complete Version Number.. Click the "Copy to Clipboard" and Paste that information Here in the Forum by pressing the "CTRL-V" key..

Zone Alarm Turns Off Windows Firewall by Default Because it will Conflict with Zone Alarm.. and when ZA is Uninstalled, ZA will Turn Windows Firewall back ON on thev way out..

Hi George,

Thanks for the reply.

I have not yet shutdown ZAP as you suggested because I was not sure why you suggested it. If I shut down ZAP, then I should re-enable Windows Firewall to have some firewall protection since it is now turned off.

I have read some posts in other threads and learned ZAP is supposed to shutdown Windows Firewall when it is installed and turn WF back on when ZAP is shutdown. That is what I hope would happen but I do not know how to verify that is really occurring on my system. The Windows Security Center indicated both were running so I manually shutdown WF. When I manually shutdown WF, Security Center then indicated only ZAP is running.

The version information for my system is as follows:
ZoneAlarm Pro version:7.0.462.000
TrueVector version:7.0.462.000
Driver version:7.0.462.000
Anti-spyware engine version:5.0.189.0
Anti-spyware signature DAT file version:01.200801.3235

Regards,
Dave

Hi George,

Thank you for clearing up my misunderstanding.

I do not know if ZAP has actually done that on my system because Windows Security Center reported both were running until I edited the registry to disable Windows Firewall. In addition, when WF is enabled through the registry and I shutdown ZAP (shutdown -- not uninsall), Windows Security Center reports WF is running.

Is there a way I can determine if the ZAP installation really did turn off WF?

Also, do you know why the control panel ON/OFF buttons for Windows Firewall are grayed out? I would like to have these enabled so I can reassure myself WF is really off without having to edit the registry. As you can see from my first message, the situation does not occur when I turn off WF before installing ZAP.

It would also be great if WF could be turned on temporarily when TrueVector is shutdown for maintenance upgrades.

Regards,
Dave

dnlathrop, you should never try to manually delete Windows firewall thru the registry. The Widnows Firewall is the 'default' firewall that will turn back on whenever you remove a third-party firewall like ZA, so when you update/upgrade ZA - for a brief moment Windows firewall will automatically come on by default - then ZA's installer will shut it off automatically when ZA firewall is ready to install itself.
In XP a way to verify your Windows firewall is off: Click on Start > (Settings)
> Control Panel >
Security Center > Manage security settings for: > Windows Firewall > General > you will see red shield - Off (not recommended) with green dot in circle. {if not make it so}
NaiveMelody NYC 1-29-08 - Margaritaville -Jimmy Buffett

Hi George,

Thanks for the reply. I guess I was not clear describing what I have done so far.

(1) When I installed ZAP the first time (without turning off WF beforehand) the Security Center indicates more than one firewall is running. When I tried to turn off WF manually through control panel, I could not because the on/off buttons were grayed out. The ON button was "checked" but it could not be changed.

(2) I reinstalled the OS and tried another install of ZAP turning off WF before the install. Security Center indicated more than one firewall was running. In this case, however, the on/off buttons for WF in the control panel applet were not grayed out. I could click OFF. When I did that, Security Center indicated only ZAP was running.

(3) I restored the first system from backup and did more testing. As indicated above, Security Center indicated more than firewall was running. I edited the registry and disabled WF. Security Center then indicated only ZAP was running. The WF control panel applet also showed WF was off but as before the buttons were grayed out and could not be changed.

So it appears WF is running with ZAP installed unless I manually turn WF off. Is WF really running? I don't know and that is why I asked how to check. I have already done what you indicated so apparently the two firewalls were actually running.

I don't like editing the registry needlessly so I would like to enable the on/off buttons of the WF control panel applet. Do you know how to do that?

Regards,
Dave

Hi and thanks for the reply.

I did not delete Windows Firewall. I only edited the enable key in the registry to disable it. Perhaps that is what you meant.

See my reply to the previous message. Apparently the two firewalls are actually running and I want only ZAP to run most of the time. I can achieve that by manually turning off WF. I prefer to use the control applet rather than a registry edit.

So my questions are:

(1) How can I tell if WF is really running when ZAP is installed and running. GerogeV answered this question and, according to what he said, both firewalls were running.

(2) Because both firewalls are running, I need to turn off WF but the control panel applet on/off buttons are grayed out. How can I enable them?
