    Default Antivirus/Antispyware

I have been using ZA Pro for a few years but in the last few days I purchased ZA ISS.
Before installing I removed previous all antivirus and spyware programmes that I had been using (as advised by ZA).
Now I'm not sure if ISS protection is running or not.
It says both are on but there are no events logged.
    I downloaded
EICAR file that was supposed to check if programme was working and ZA found it and disposed of it but only after I ran a scan.
Does this mean that viruses/spyware can be downloaded onto my machine but will only be detected when I run the scan?

(Sorry if this is an obvious question but I'm not sure what I need to do with this new software (maybe I made the wrong choices in setup) and want to be absolutely sure I'm protected)

    Operating System:Windows XP Pro
    Software Version:7.0
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

    Hi!
what was the extension of the EICAR you have downloaded?
For example, what happens if you try to download EICAR from here?
    http://www.eicar.org/download/eicar.com

It is normal that files are checked 'on access' (i.e. when you open them).
Some small files (more likely to contain viruses) will be checked after they have been saved on your HD.

Its important that you keep your ZASS always active (on default settings) and download AV updates hourly (by default is set to three hours).

    Cheers,
    Fax

    Hi Fax,
    Thanks for the speedy response.
The file I downloaded eicar.com file but did just try your link and ZA did give me a warning so didn't download it again, that was very comforting.
I do have my ZA always active but
    have changed the
AV updates to an hourly check (it was on 3 hours as you say).
Also, thanks for the explanation of "on access" I wasn't sure what that meant (more evidence of my inexperience I guess)
    I
hope you feel proud of yourself that you have turned a "virus neurotic" into a "happy bunny"
    this early in the day.
    Cheersraeburn
