Default ZoneAlarm Free Firewall will not install

I have been using ZA free firewall for many years now. I have never had a problem with it until today. In a nutshell, I got a notice that there was an update, I downloaded the file, and after doubleclicking on the file, the update failed. I then noticed that ZA was no longer in my system tray, it was no longer in my start menu, and when I checked Add/Remove in my Control Panel, there was no longer an entry for ZA.

So I downloaded the installation file for ZA free firewall again and doubleclicked on it. Actually, I've done this several times. Each time, I get a popup window that says that TrueVector is still running and to stop it using my services window. The thing is, when I check Services, TrueVector isn't currently started.

I've run several antivirus scans and have also checked my system with HijackThis. All show that my PC is free of malware. Additionally, I've removed registry settings of ZA-related entries. But still I get the popup window about TrueVector.

OK, here are the formalities:

1. I haven't run any other firewalls EVER on this PC

2. I used Firefox to download the file to my desktop and then double clicked on it. I didn't use any download managers or web accelerators.

3. Windows Defender, Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware. (No, I don't use a resident anti-virus program; I know some people think that's unwise, but I don't like any of them enough to trust to my machine.) All are off at the moment.

4. Firefox, but later I retired with IE 7 and had the same trouble.

5. Not applicable, as far as I can tell.

6. Not applicable. I am able to download the installation program just fine.

7. No anti-virus software.

8. ZA is not in the tray.

I'm using a fully patched version of Windows XP Professional SP2.

Operating System:Windows XP Pro
Software Version:
Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

Did you ever think to go into ZA Menu Overview/Preferences and Un-Check "Load ZoneAlarm Free on Startup"and Reboot before upgrading so that the old TrueVector would be shut down first..??Here is a List of the Most common User problems..a.) The first thing a Hacker, Trojan or Virus tries to do if they infect your computer or gain access to your Computer, thru an Email Attachment or pop-up on a Website or user over-ridding the Security alerts by the firewall, is to shutdown, any Firewall, AV/AS.. that is why some users have problems updating ZoneAlarm or any other security program..vsmon.exe/TrueVector is the first thing that loads when your computer stats to boot up, the ZA tray Icon is just a Icon that loads later in the Boot-up.. and TrueVector /vsmon.exe is the last thing to shutdown when your computer shuts down to insure that your computer is always protected..That is why in "Load ZoneAlarm on startup in not Un-checked" and computer Rebooted, Truevector will stay in Memory and will not be removed during Install or Upgrade, in fact the install may fail because Truevector in an attempt to protect your computer will think that the New Install attempt to install a new version of Truevector may be a Hacker Attempting to shut down Truevector..That is why it is Important to use the Un-Check "Start ZA on Startup" method so that a New Upgrade Copy of trueVector/vsmon.exe can bee installed..b.) some Computer Users thinkhttp://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o...2/th_1what.gif that if one Firewall and anti-Virus is good, two or three different ones running at the same time must be better? http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o.../th_1mad-1.gif

1- have you properly un-installed any previous firewall and/or anti-virus?? = this needs to be done - http://forums.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/...message.id=154. Most new pc/laptops come with pre-installed security software, which should be properly un-installed prior to installing any ZoneAlarm firewall product.

Just One, Not Two -- Never use two software Firewalls at the same time. Completely uninstall one before installing another. Use the vendor's uninstall utility or if not available, use the Windows XP add/remove software tool in the control panel.
Just One, Not Two -- Never use two anti-virus products at the same time. to avoid any problem just do the following:- Download the installer- On your current ZA, Uncheck "Load ZA... at startup" (under ZA Overview --> Preferences tab)- Reboot your PC- Install the new update (upgrade or clean install)

Usually this will happen if the ZA did not shut itself off when the upgrade took place. In other words the ZA driver was still working as it was attempted to replace it. Not a good thing.
The only good news I can give to you is that this is a very rare event and very seldom ever happens.
You will see some posts/threads discussing this on our forum, but the again this is the place where users come for answers and help.So it is natural to see this happen here.

Ok here is the fix.

Start the PC in the safe mode.
- Click on Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs
- RIGHT-click on Uninstall ZoneAlarm, then select Properties
- Under Target you will see the following line:

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"

Change it to:

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean /

(first add a space and then type in the /clean)

Use the Apply and OK in that window.

Return to the Uninstall ZoneAlarm in the Zone Labs of the All Programs
- Click OK to run the uninstaller, and OK any security alerts that
pop up.
- say "Yes when being prompted for the removal of all files.
- Reboot

Now follow the ZA uninstallation with a quick and easy cleanup using this guide:

http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...message.id=103

Once finished, reboot.
But first make sure the Window Defender, SpyBot and the Ad-Aware are disabled from starting with the windows startups.

Now try the installation of the ZA.
Should be ok.

Best regards.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, neither is applicable, since, as stated above, ZA no longer appears in my system tray or in my start menu. As a matter of fact, it appears it was almost entirely removed. C:\Program Files\Zone Labs has a grand total of 7 files and 2 folders. Under the circumstances, there's no way I can go into the ZA menu or Click on Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs - RIGHT-click on Uninstall ZoneAlarm.

Or am I missing something?

Is there an zauninstall.exe to be found in the C:\ProgramFiles\ZoneLabs\ZoneLabs folder?

No, there's not. There's a folder called repair that has 4 DLL files and a filed named vsmon.exe. In the ZoneAlarm folder there are two log files. And that's all there is.

Your best bet would be to boot into Safe Mode, then install the new version. Then do a clean uninstall (either in Safe Mode or by unchecking "Load ZoneAlarm at startup, rebooting, and doing the clean uninstall) followed by the install. Make sure to delete all pertinent folders and registry entried mentioned in previous posts after the ininstall.

Yesterday, I
downloaded and installed the free Zone Alarm.
During the installation, a message came up saying "...application has failed because zyp.dll was not found."
I clicked the "OK", then a few moments later the message returned and
I clicked "OK" again,
and then once more.
Within a minute or so, the installation resumed and Zone Alarm seemed to be fine.
Why would the installation complete after the message said application failed?
I went through all the
steps to get
the program
running and it seemed to be working.
I got a couple of ordinary alerts about whether to allow a program to access the internet, and I responded to them.

I did a search and learned about people having problems with this missing zyp.dll file relating to Zone Alarm.
I frankly don't understand much about this.

Might there be a problem with my Zone Alarm which I'm unaware of?
Could the program not be protecting my computer as it should?

What is the zyp.dll file for?
Today, the program says it has blocked 10 intrusions, 13 intrusions, etc.

I use Cookie Wall.

There is no
Zone Alarm cookie listed .
Should there be one,
and should it be listed in the "keep" file?

I am wondering why my messages are completely ignored.

Are they
in
the wrong threads?
Are my questions unanswerable?
