Default Clean install or upgrade better?

Hello, I'm using an old version of ZA, and have been procrastinating for a while about upgrading, but I'm finally getting around to it. I've downloaded the upgrader, but it offers the option of either upgrading or doing a clean install, so I searched the boards, and doing a clean install sounds a bit... complicated. Though I'm not very computer literate, so that's probably why everything sounds fancy. Not to mention I don't want to lose my settings, but I think the Backup and Restore option should cover that (I think).

Anyway, I just wanted to ask for the opinions of some people on whether a clean install or just upgrading my version is better. I'd ask for advice on how to do a clean install, but there are probably already enough topics about that on these boards that I can find myself.

Thank you in advance for any constructive advice.

Operating System:
Windows XP Home Edition
Product Name:
ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite

From what I can tell from your past posts, you have 6.5 ZA Suite and if your planning to upgrade to ZA 7x; I would not only suggest a 'clean install' option - but I would advise you to 'actually do some extra un-install' of your current/ old ZA 6.5 before attempting to install a new ZA 7x Suite. Click here >
[*]* [ Special Note: if your updating from 6x series or earlier - you most probably need to use un-install instructions especially for those with ZA anti-virus = ZA Suite and ZA Anti-virus - upgrading from CA av to new Kaspersky anti-virus - this needs un-installing: Please see/ click here:[*]>[*]
- there are number of other variations
of un-installing ][*]or[*]
Remember, on your current ZA > go to "Overview" > Preferences > General - "uncheck the box for" = 'Load ZoneAlarm at startup' > click once, wait - it may take a few
seconds for it to register, but it will clear the box.[*]
Please restart/ reboot. <
After using any of the above un-install instructions, read the link ^
73645 about how to prepare for a new ZA install - follow tips and guidelines - they do help. Keep license key handy; on paper and enter when prompted. You may want to keep a 'memory eye' on your most popular settings in case they're not retained; nevertheless, the new program settings will look cleaner and slimmer. You may need to seriously 'make the move' as there is some 'hearsay' that 6.5 av updates are/ will be discontinuing >
NaiveMelody NYC 5-21-08 - Jump Into The Fire - Harry Nilsson

Whoops, forgot to add that I'm using ZA 6.5. Thank you for changing the title. Alright, guess I'd better clean out the old 6.5 settings to prepare for version 7. This is probably going to take a while, better set aside a few hours for this.

So it would be better to do all this in Safe Mode then? And should I unplug my computer from the Internet while I'm doing this? I have a cable modem connected so the connection is always open, and I'm a bit wary of turning off the Firewall while the connection is still open.

After glancing at all the links, I think I'm supposed to...
1) change the uninstall command to .exe /clean, then run the normal "uninstall Zonelabs" option
2) search for any remaining ZA stuff on my local hard drive, delete it all, empty the Recycle Bin
3) do some registry changes through Notepad, and then just install the new version of ZA I've already downloaded, using my old license key (which I've written down), and then from there just set up the new ZA?
