Default Can't install ZoneAlarm: ZoneAlarm client does not work, program is closed

On my new Laptop with windows vista, I can not install ZoneAlarmFree. I used the McAfee removal tool to be sure McAfee was removed completely. I turned off Windows Firewall. During installation I turned off AVG-virus and spyware scanner. I downloaded the install file in Internet Explorer and did not use a downloadmanager. I tried to install as administrator and I tried to install not as administrator. As it is a new laptop, ZoneAlarm was not on it, so the problem can not be a prevoious version of ZA. I tried to install 2 versions of ZA: 7.1.254 and 7.1.248: both didn't work.
I keep getting the message that ZoneAlarm client is not working and that the program will be closed. I get that message before the registration pop-up and also when I finish installing and try to start up ZoneAlarm.
What am I doing wrong?
I hope somebody can help me out.
Thank you, Angela

As I don't know what to try anymore, I have installed **bleep** firewall.

I am really sorry you went to the trouble to give me this clear and extended answer, whereas I had decided not to use ZA anymore. I hesitated a while, because I like ZA, but as it is not the first time I have troubles with ZA and as learning to know the new Firewall has taken a lot of time already, I am not going to try again to get ZA working. At least not for this moment. So I did not try your answer, but of course I'll write here what I tried (of it). Maybe it helps others to come to a solution. Thank you and greetings, Angela

1.) It sounds like copy of ZAFree 7.1.254.000 for Vista that you tried to install was Corrupted, either durring the Download, or durring the Install by a conflict with something on your Computer..
I downloaded 7.1.254.000 two times and I downloaded 7.1.248 one time. Neither of the versions worked.

2.) Was the AVG-Anti-Virus Version 7.5 or 8.0? (Sometimes the New AVG 8.0 conflict with ZoneAlarm, Unless removed First, then Re-Installed after ZA is installed)

3.) was the AVG-Ant-virus just the Basic Free AVG or was it the Suite or include aother features besides just Anti-Virus?
Version 8.0, the basic free version, but the first time I tried to install ZA, AVG was not yet on the system.

4.) Here is my Recomendation for Re-Installing ZAFree 7.1.254.000
I used the McAfee removal tool and searched afterwards for files which are mentoned in manual remove-advises. Did not find any.
I did the same when I tried reinstalling ZoneAlarm after the first time. First I uninstalled ZA, after that I deleted the Zonelabsfolder from System32 and searched (in safe mode) for vsmon.exe and other files mentioned in this forum, but not all the files you mention. I did not find these files. I used CCleaner, but did not clean the registry as you mention here.

http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o...h_1welcome.gif to the Zone Alarm User Forum..It is Sometimes very Difficult to Diagnose and fix a Computer from halfway across the Country,
without All the Details, without the ability to sit in front of your Computer monitor and see what's going on..
If you would Describe your Computer Setup/OS and Version of Zone Alarm that you are having a problem with
and what difficulty you are having, and what Previous Version of ZA and Norton, McAfee or other Security programs that you have installed,
there are several very knowledgeable Volunteer Participants willing to help you try solving your problem with Zone Alarm..Please provide as much detail and error messages etc. that you see on your ComputerMonitor.

4.) Here is my Recomendation for Re-Installing ZAFree 7.1.254.000

First re-download the latest ZASS version here http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...ory_vista.html

Probably the best is to have a full manual remove ofany other Firewall, and Anti-Virus..(Except Windows Firewall or Windows defender are OK)

Please note that ZA does not always play nice with many security tools. For example, AVG, ad-aware, spybotS&D, Spyware Doctor, Spysweeper. For sure it cannot be installed if you still have another antivirus software or firewall installed or active.

(if you don't find any of the Files in the following steps don't worry, just go onto the next step..)

01.) Restart your computer
02.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep

using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
Enter
04.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
