Default Zone Alarm Update install problem with instdrivers

    I installed zls setup_70_483_en.exe
but I got a message during installation that it couldn't install C:
\ temp\071008103536\instdrivers\x32\klif\cat. I had the install continue and it didn't fix the interent access problem.
I then deleted Microsoft service Pack 3 and rebooted because I
wasn't allowed to remove kb951748 until I did this step first.
Even with Zone Alarm basic on Medium setting I could never get on line.
I am currently using a friend's computer to send this. I had to download the Zone Alarm upgrade onto
my friend's computer and use a flash drive to get it to my computer.I have Windows XP and use Zone Alarm free basic.
    What is the fix?

    Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
    Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

Hi!remove manually ALL traces of ZA and try to reinstall.First Remove ZA from the add/remove programs (if there) then:01.) Restart your computer
02.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
03.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
    Enter
04.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
05.) Once you are at the desktop, Click Start, My Computer
06.) Click Tools, Folder Options, View Tab
07.) Place a dot next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
08.) Remove the check from "Hide Protected Operating System Files
    (Recommended)"
09.) Choose Yes to the warning
    10.) Click OK
    11.) Double click C:

Note: In the future steps if you do not see any files or folders, please click
the "Show Files" link to view them.

12.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs -
    > ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
    possible.

    14.) Close this window
    15.) Click Start, My Computer
    16.) Double Click the C:
17.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
18.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Double Click the System32 Folder
20.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.

21.) Locate and delete the following files in the System32 folder if they are
    present:

    - vsconfig.xml
    - vsxml.dll
    - vsregexp.dll
    - vsdata.dll
    - vsdata95.vxd
    - vsdatant.sys
    - vsmonapi.dll
    - vspubapi.dll
    - vsinit.dll
    - vsutil.dll
    - vswmi.dll
    - zlcommdb.dll
    - zlcomm.dll
    - z llictbl.dat
    - zpeng24.dll

22.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type %temp% and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

23.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start -> Run
    - Type Prefetch and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

24.) Remove the following registry entries by going to Start -> Run and
typing in regedit. Use the folders on the left side of the window to navigate
    to the specified directories.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsmon
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsdatant

*Important Advisory: Deleting registry entries incorrectly may cause
serious problems to your operating system, which may necessitate the
need to reinstall it. Please make sure you are able to perform these
deletions correctly before you decide to edit the entries. If you are not
sure, you should seek help from someone who is familiar with editing the
    registry.

For information about how to edit the registry in Windows, from your
desktop, click Start >> Run >> and type regedit. Click on Help >> Help
Topics. Under the Contents tab, click Change Keys and Values (this may
be found under the How to... section).

Also, you should always make a backup of the registry before editing it.
You can find this in the same section of the Help files.

25.) Close this window, then empty your recycle bin.
    26.) Restart the computer.

    Thank you for
your 26 step solution to solving the problem. I am afraid that the 26 step solution is beyond my level of experience and comfort zone.
Is there something else that I can try first that MIGHT work that would have fewer steps?
Worst case is I try the simple stuff and it doesn't work and then find someone to help me
    do the hard stuff.
Would it work to copy a missing file off a computer with a working Zone alarm and put it on my computer?Would using control panel uninstall do a better job than a clean install of Zone Alarm?
I'll appreciate any ideas you have.

I tried all that and more. Neither the new update or even the old app will install, always hanging the system on klif.cat.
I've been buying - that's right purchasing this product not just using the free version - for several years. But that's over till you guys get a decent installer or a decent uninstaller for that matter. Updating zone alarm without issue is the exception not the rule.
I've wasted about 3 hours on this. Not another penny from me. You guys deserve to go out of business with such disregard for your customers.
Now I'm off to enable windows firewall. Give me an email if you make an installer that works.

Well, that's actually the people I've lost faith in. And I've already wasted more time on this issue, and the majority of every time I do an update, than I find acceptable. It's just unaccpetable to have an install that
    fails so often or an
uninstall that doesn't really uninstall. There's no excuse for it, and I suspect tech support would attemp to give me excuses or as bad have me go back through deleteing more registry keys, removing more temp files, etc...... and maybe with another 10 hours I'd end up with a working product again. no thanks.

I completely sympathise with WolfKC, since I have precisely the same problem, and have had it for a long time. Try installing any version of ZA (I have the Internet Security Suite) and the installation freezes at 53%, at the point where it is trying to install klif.cat. You can say there are only users here, but that 26-step uninstallation procedure is a direct quotation from the advice you get from ZA Support staff. It doesn't work, and I think that ZA Support should try coming up with more individual-user oriented advice. You say you have never had any problems reinstalling, which suggests that WolfKC and I have something in our computers which you don't have, something that is messing up the installation. ZA support should try working out what it is. As a technology correspondent on the BBC News website said yesterday after being bumped off the net by Microsoft's security update: 'You would have thought that MS would have tested the patch on one of the most popular firewalls'.
I've developed one work-around that does allow me to install ZA, but it has a bad side-effect, so I'll be trying another tomorrow (21.02 Central European Time over here). I'll keep you posted.

    Till tomorrow
    Michael

Hi!the fix is designed to resolve different issues connected to bad install. This to be sure you are clean and can install ZA again. It just cover a wide spectrum of posiibilities to maximise success rate...The procedure may look complex but it is not, Justexplained in detail to help users to complete it successfully. This is a shorter alternative:http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...message.id=103But users get confused... how to proceed. And there are also others...
