Default ZA 7.0 and AVG 8.0 conflict

I have had a problem with ZA and AVG conflicting - AVG would hang on manual or scheduled scan. I contacted AVG and they were able to reproduce the problem. They sent me the following reply:

>> start AVG reply
AS I stated earlier, by analyzing the dumps you sent I found out that
the scan process is hung while trying to open file
"C:\System Volume Information\tracking.log".

There seems to be something rotten between System Restore and
ZoneAlarm. Fortunately, I was able to reproduce the problem on my test

- installed AVG 8.0.138
- installed ZoneAlarm 7.0.483
- added a new disk volume, formatted it and restarted
- scheduled a scan on this new drive
- deadlock occurred

1. The problem persists even if I completely uninstalled AVG. I just
tried to view the "\System Volume Information\tracking.log" file on
the new volume using a file viewer and the deadlock occurred even
without AVG.

2. The problem goes away when I disable loading of driver klif.sys,
which is installed as a part of ZoneAlarm:

File: klif.sys
Verified: Signed
Signing date: 10:41 15.5.2007
Publisher: Kaspersky Lab
Description: Klif Mini-Filter
Product: Kaspersky Anti-Virus
File version:

3. Simply disabling Anti-virus and Anti-spyware in ZoneAlarm's control
panel doesn't help.

4. Turning off System Restore for the affected drive and restarting
doesn't help as well.

Since ZA's uninstallation process doesn't allow to select individual
components, I suggest to uninstall it as a whole and urge it's vendor
to fix this issue.

Thank you for your help.

I am hoping ZA team will pick up on this and look into the issue.

I recomend Installing ZAFREE 7.0.483.000 First, and the AVG 8.0after ZAFree is configured and running Smoothly..The simplest procedure is to:The New ZAFree 7.0.483.000 Requires a Minimum of Win WP with Service Pack 2 or SP3, and may not install if XP has not been Upgraded to SP2..1.)Download the ZAFree 7.0.483installerpreferably with IE7 and no Download Manager/accelerator like Get-Right) (Click the Red Download Now Button)ZAFreefor WinXP SP2 (zlsSetup_70_483_000_en.exe 44.6MB)2.) Please note that ZAFree does not always play nice with many security tools. For example, ad-aware, Ad-watch, AVG 8, spybotS&D, Spyware Doctor, Spysweeper. For sure it cannot be installed if you have still another Antivirus software or Firewall (other than Windows Firewall) installed or active.

To troubleshoot ZAFree issues it is highly recommendedthat youremove all the above and install them back on (if you really need to) after your ZAFreeis installed and configured and runningas it should. If you have not installed any of the above ensure that NO left overs areon the system (they can conflict with the ZA install).
You must go into ZA Overview/Preferences and UN-Check "Load ZoneAlarm Free on Startup"3. Reboot the Computer. 4. Install the new ZA update (clean or upgrade) and Accept the default Setting,( Do not Accept the Free Trial of the Security Suite) Accept Auto-Learn Mode and Choose Trusted Zone, not the Internet Zone..
Please Post back with your Progress Report..

Following the above recommendation from ZA, I removed ZA and AVG and then re-installed ZA first and got it working, then installed AVG.

All is now good in firewall/anti-virus land.
