Default NTVDM CPU error on startup after removing ZA

Hi guys.

First off I fell victim to the ZA+MS update conflict after resolving that issue, I decided to try **bleep** firewall.

I removed ZA as per the uninstall guide and installed **bleep**. Now I am getting the following message when Windows is booting:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe
NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. Click "close" to shut down the application
CS: 1082:IP0266 OP:63 65 6c 74 65

This pops up just before **bleep** starts, which makes me think something is conflicting with **bleep**, but I just can't find out what it could be.

Operating System:Windows XP Home Edition
Software Version:
Product Name:ZoneAlarm (Free)

Well, thank you to the Zonealarm community.

I just thought maybe asking for a li'l help from one of the suppliers that caused the "bleep" (nice swear filter by the way) would be the ideal thing to do, given that Microsoft Support (the company we all like to lambast) actually spent 3hrs, in a conference call with my ISP, on the phone helping me (at their expense).

I know I was using ZA Free and I'm not entitled to the same level of after care service as the paid for users, but even I give free advice, with a smile may I add, to my customers even if they don't buy anything from me.

http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o...h_1welcome.gif to the Zone Alarm User Forum.. http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o.../1readthis.gif (Notice the Welcome Smile)

It is Nice of your to treat your Customers so nicely,

CheckPoint does likewise for all of it's Customers, and offers this Free User Forum for more experienced Users to provide Users of all versions of ZoneAlarm even the Free Version with an outlet for Free Support.... That is in addition to the FREE support Checkpoint provides to all of it's Paid Customers with a valid License Key.

However, You came here looking for Support for *Bleep*, and this is not the *Bleep* support Forum.. !!

Since I'm a Nice person also, on the off chance there may be a few ZoneAlarm files left behind that are Conflicting with *Bleep*,

Here is my Free Advice...

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.

21.) Locate and delete the following files in the System32 folder if they are
present:

- vsconfig.xml
- vsxml.dll
- vsregexp.dll
- vsdata.dll
- vsdata95.vxd
- vsdatant.sys
- vsmonapi.dll
- vspubapi.dll
- vsinit.dll
- vsutil.dll
- vswmi.dll
- zlcommdb.dll
- zlcomm.dll
- z llictbl.dat
- zpeng24.dll

22.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

- Go to Start -> Run
- Type %temp% and click OK
- Select all of these files and delete them

23.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below.

- Go to Start -> Run
- Type Prefetch and click OK
- Select all of these files and delete them

24.) Remove the following registry entries by going to Start -> Run and
typing in regedit. Use the folders on the left side of the window to navigate
to the specified directories.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsmon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\vsdatant

*Important Advisory: Deleting registry entries incorrectly may cause
serious problems to your operating system, which may necessitate the
need to reinstall it. Please make sure you are able to perform these
deletions correctly before you decide to edit the entries. If you are not
sure, you should seek help from someone who is familiar with editing the
registry.

For information about how to edit the registry in Windows, from your
desktop, click Start >> Run >> and type regedit. Click on Help >> Help
Topics. Under the Contents tab, click Change Keys and Values (this may
be found under the How to... section).

Also, you should always make a backup of the registry before editing it.
You can find this in the same section of the Help files
.

25.) Close this window, then empty your recycle bin.
26.) Restart the computer.
27.) Now try installing *Bleep*.

Good Luck with *Bleep*
